Ok, here the thing! I bought a new PS3 steamer set for our grandson. I don't deal with the parents directly too much. They mention today that the engine doesn't work? I asked if they read the manual and if they tried anything? They tell me they put it on the track, and tried some type of reset. It didn't take or change anything. I can't get much out of them because they don't run trains (parents). I asked them to bring me back the whole set's components so I could try a reset or see what's needed. Was there something else they could be doing wrong? Is there any reset instructions in the manual?? Is it hard to do?? Does the engine have a tether and could that just need some tweeking?? Should I just do a reset with my DCS system by adding it first and then engine reset??

I have a feeling the kids broke something and the parents don't know what to look for.

I'm reading through the manual and it appears that they skipped explaining about the DCS/DCC switch to owners??  The book just says that it maybe necessary to reprogram the engine if the address gets changed?? Well, what if the switch is on DCC?

Also, after firing the rear coupler at idle, you must press direction and then the + throttle to get going.

Some of these things are not obvious to parents that don't run trains!

You gotta like the 'easy fixes'...congrats Joe

Speaking of the manual...Did you happen to notice whether or not the light comes on immediately after applying power?  I think both my manuals mention the light coming on and the recommended wait period, but it seems like the order in which you hook things up makes a difference.

On both my new PS3 SD70ACe and 4-6-0 Pennsy starter engines, if I apply power at the track leads last, then the light will come on and go off after a few seconds, then start up sounds begin automatically.  However, if I hook up the barrel jack at the DCSRC receiver box last (leads connected to receiver and brick alredy plugged into the outlet), then nothing happens at first, and I just wait about 30 seconds and start running (lights or sounds don't react until I hit SU/SD).

Wondering if you noticed the same?

Yes sir, with track leads already hooked to dcsrc receiver & lock-on, and brick already plugged into the wall...then connecting the barrel jack at the receiver last seems to bypass the 'normal automatic' start up described in the manual.  Doesn't seem to cause any problems that I can tell...just a little oddity I noticed about the order of connecting things (kind of a convenient bypass, because then it won't start up smoking, etc till I hit the SU/SD button, if I want to step away for a minute after gettng setup).

Also, in regards to the manuals, I didn't notice they specify which setting to use for conventional, 'DCS or DCC'.  I assume DCS is correct, but wonder if either would work.  Like you mentioned, little tips that would be nice to know for the train newbies like myself.
