A new one hundred mile road ( the largest in a generation according to some) is being planned for Utah. It sounds likely that U.P would step in...or maybe not. Interesting interactive map is on the website.
They have been having a pretty good oil boom in the basin for two years now, I'd imagine this is to support that growth. A lot of that land there is tribal owned so that could get complicated. (Unless they go all old school and have the Calvary chase them off)
When the land slide occurred at Thistle, the DRGW moved their mainline up the canyon wall on the north side. There was a railroad going south from this point, Utah Railway or Carbon County Railway? This line was never reconnected and the coal it handled was trucked west to the UP and trans loaded. There was always talk about reconnected this branch by building west to the UP. Is this new proposed rail line any part of the link to reconnect this isolated branch?
Heber Valley Railroad is closer to Salt Lake and the Wasatch Mts. Commodities like Natural gas and oil use rail transportation until infrastructure (pipelines) is/are in place. Utah is big outdoor recreation, IMO. A lot of state and national parks. Salt Lake City is a beautiful city.
