Fun video!  When I was riding the Canadian I learned a lot about Canada's trains in general, but also about grain trains.  The crew did a nice presentation in the Park dome car for Prestige passengers that was quite informative.

  • The legal limit for a train in Canada is 3 miles long.
  • While Canada is on the Metric system, railroads still use Imperial units to be compatible with the US.
  • Grain trains are subsidized by the government of Canada because there is not much profit in moving grain.  That is why the Candian grain hoppers have all the fun branding.
  • Finally, not grain train specific, but many of the passing sidings, especially in western Canada are not 3 miles long, but guess what is?  The Canadian.  We spent a lot of time in the hole waiting for CN trains to pass.  The crew of this fine train is very experienced.  As promised, we made up most of the time once we got into Ontario where there are more routes and less traffic for only a 2 hour delay into Toronto.  Not bad for a 2800-mile route of mostly single track.

I have lots of photos of grain trains on my home computer.  But I'm not sure I'll post them to this thread because I don't want to take away from the OP's video.

However, the experience in Canada was enough that I do have a 3rd Rail CN Wide cab SD40-2 on preorder now  Just corrected the graphics on it Saturday on the latest QAQC pass.

Thanks for the comments guys. Jonathan…..feel free to post your pictures here if you want. Not a problem.

Very nice. I assembled a CN Grain Train as well. Really like the colorful appearance of the train.

The rainbow hopper is actually a chemical hopper and not a grain hopper. The chemical formula is on the side, which is for Diisocyanatonexane. (Far removed from grain. ) It's used to make polyurethane foams and coatings, and as a hardener for auto and airplane paints.

That said, most people aren't going to know the difference, and the hopper certainly looks great.

I agree. For me, the coolness factor is the key. Nice picture!

very nice. I really like the CN caboose.

Donald

The caboose is designated "International Service," shown below the cupola, which meant it was set up for service crossing the border between Canada and the U.S. I thought the logo used on the GF-30s (Canadian version of the SD40-2), with the map, fit well with the International Service designated caboose. (Plus the yellow cupola used on these picks up nicely with the yellow stripes on the engines.)
