Now for something really different--at least from myself. Dirk Hertel was over the other day and made
this neat video of my Right of Way Shay roaring around my elongated figure 8 layout. Let's see if I can
upload it successfully.

Yesterday I came across (and bought) two very small tinplate items: A Hornby signal box and a French CR station. I updated my book (Tin stuff from Fred v4.pdf) on accessories with this and previous finds and the "book" can be downloaded if you are interested; be aware it is a large attachment and will take some time to download.
Have a good new years weekend all! More tinplate in 2017.

I'm new to tinplate this Christmas season and am really enjoying learning about these wonderful trains. Here's a short clip of under my Christmas tree:

New to me this week, a Hafner 1010 somebody painted up in the blood red LMS paint scheme. I plan on completing their efforts.
Also a pair of French Hornby passenger coaches arrived from the great white north.
and another T-P-K floor train from Sophia, Bulgaria needing a new roof on the loco. Otherwise in excellent condition.

She is doing pretty well. We are enjoying the rain at home today. Her surgery went well even though there was still a small amount of cancer in one lymph node. We went from inoperable to this far so that is good. She will be getting radiation in January for about 6 weeks and then we go from there. Thank you for asking.
good to hear. and don't take 100% of what the docs say...smart as they are, they aren't in control. My youngest is sitting behind me as I type, and 23 years ago, when she popped out four months early, the docs gave her less than 10% of surviving the birth, and if she did there would be a ton of problems. wasn't a joy ride, but she's in her junior year at collage and completely healthy.
prayers sent.
Making a little progress on my "cast iron" steamer project.
In addition to the .45 ACP casings for the headlight and stack, a .22lr hull fills the former headlight opening just right! The rear of the 999 was shortened so the cab is brought forward a little. Also the details under the center part of the running boards was removed for more of a "high water" look like the old cast iron locos. Cylinders seem a little small now, but I'm not sure of how to enlarge them. The new pilot is proving to be a challenge. I'm on the second version and still not sure if there won't be a third.
Even if it never does really look like a vintage cast iron loco, it definitely will look better than a stock Marx 999 pulling mid '20's tin!

Great photo of the NYC and PRR racing over the bridges ... on the south side of Chicago ( land of big bad Leroy Brown) at about 96th street crossing the Calumet river , there were 4 lift bridges and one bascule bridge ... NYC on two of the lift bridges, PRR on the other two lift bridges and the B&O on the bascule. The Broadway Limited and Twentieth Century would leave downtown at the same time ( two different stations) and meet at Englewood, stop and take off at the same time , along miles of parallel track through the wastelands of south Chicago steaming across the bridges in a race daily ( that was then). With all the consolidation of the railroads .... one of the lift bridges remains active. Back in the 60's they scrapped one of the lift bridges killing two workers... so they decided to leave the others in place. A run away barge ran in to the B&O bascule bridge ... so it was scrapped ..Chessie main ties into old PRR main to cross the Calumet and returns on the other side. In my youth rode the lift bridge several times ...the operator had to leave his track side office and climb atop the the raising section of the bridge to the house in the center to operate the bridge ....the action of the bridge raising and lower was so smooth ... perfectly balanced with counter weights . Operating lift bridge dates to 1911 + - .

Happy New Years

lookin really good Andy!
Inasmuch as the theme is the south end of a northbound train I'll post these two prewar AF photos that I used a couple of months ago. The real Comet of course was double ended, just like the Flyer version.

Had to put the Ives 3217 on the track for a run. Pretty smooth for a toy that's over 100 years old (c1916). The Boston & Maine diesel is a Williams pulling some postwar Lionel rolling stock.

Clearing out the camera. This is a combined TCA-TTOS effort at the November Cal-Stewart meet in Pomona CA.

Some of my latest Tin! The Military HQ building is very tough to find in absolutely perfect shape, I was real lucky to find her in one of my Western Pa Antique stores. Had been looking for one in absolutely perfect condition for years.

I get the OSH calendar every year. Great paintings of trains for each month. The back cover of the 2016 calendar had this toy train painting.

Wonderful stuff this week, folks. Not much happening here...we have a number of projects tee'd up for this winter, not the least of which is this set of Lionel 600-series passenger cars picked up at York a couple of years ago:
Nothing major planned, just a rewire and polish for two of the three. The 601 has some corrosion on the insert on one side...we'll need to disassemble, strip, repaint, re-decal the insert, then reassemble:
Otherwise they should clean up nice.
Hope everyone has/had a great New Year!
PD
now there's something I'd like to find, those will look great.
