Now that is a story I can get behind. Thank you Rich. I still have to catch up on the other New York Central News you shared, been busy offline.
Thanks Rich and everyone else at FWHS who worked their cabooses off to make this feat possible.
As a long-time NYC fan, this is some of the best news I've ever heard. Looks like I'll be busting out my MTH Rail King Mohawk for celebration!
Great news.
Here's the museum link with more photos of 3001

Also a favorite stop on the Virtual Raifan cameras.
600 mohawks! I didn't think they had that many.
great story
4mil wow.
Wow! This is great news. I never thought a NYC locomotive would be returned to operation.
I wonder who will put out a O gauge Mohawk model next? Lionel or MTH?
3001, the passenger cars, AND restored NYC stations!
Thank you FWRHS for preserving rr history. So future generations can experience it!

That was all classes of Mohawks: 185 L-1's and 300 L-2's which were freight only, plus the later 65 L-3's and 50 L-4's that were dual service
Nice to see an iconic engine brought back to life. But it's going to leave a large void at the museum. The article mentioned that the museum is reassessing its collection - I hope this isn't a sign of trouble. The museum is well worth a stop if you're in the area, and it's along a very busy main line.

On former NYC track, too! Much of the Indiana Northeastern Railroad is made up of former NYC lines.
I just made a pledge for this locomotive! I wish I could do more but alas, I live in the middle of nowhere Texas. Maybe once I graduate from Mechanical Engineering I can get involved.
Curious to know what shop could or will handle the dirty work, ….I’ve never been to Ft. Wayne’s place,….do they have the facilities to handle such a restoration? …..

Hey Rich, I had seen a video some time ago by a YouTube personality who did a tour of the museum. The one thing he believed was that the tender that was behind 3001 was not the actual tender for it, but the one behind that one. He had cited that 3001's tender had been popped behind some Pennsylvania engine, and when it was stored I think he said Altoona, the storage shed or engine house caught on fire. This resulted in 3001's tender getting warped by the heat. He went on to say that the tender behind 3001 was in fact the tender to the Pennsylvania engine. It would probably take me a bit to find the video, but I figured I would ask if you had heard that story.

Pat, I want to say Hot Water had answered a similar question about the facilities at Fort Wayne pertaining to 3985 Challenger going there. I know that someone had posted a very long reply in which Jack had picked all the bits apart so he could answer them one by one. I am trying to find that post now.
Pat, Ignore most of the above as it is Illinois not Indiana. Sorry folks, my bad. Also, Hot Water does highlight some stuff just not if the shop has the facilities.

To be sure certain portions will be done by other vendors off site, ….some of us were spitballing where the actual deconstruction/construction might take place,…..

They haven't restored / repaired nearly as many locomotives as you have.
IIRC, the 765 was restored there.

Well, I'm sure Kelly Lynch and crew will get things right as rain regardless as where stuff needs to get done.

Models don’t count!……😁…….I’ve only worked on one real one, …ol #60 on the Black Water & Western …..my grandfather was a volunteer mechanic when that tourist attraction was just getting its feet wet, ……I’d go with him, and stay by his side, doing the heavy work he couldn’t do anymore, ……like I said, I’ve never been to FWHS, so I have no clue what goes on there,…..good to know they can handle it.

Don't know how/where you came up with THAT, but 3985 did NOT go to Fort Wayne! The donated locomotives from the UP went to Silvis, Ill.

Yes and I corrected myself at the bottom. I knew you had facts about 3985, but I couldn't remember where the post was at. I commented after an initial search lead me no where. So, I looked it up again in a different way and found the post, amended at the bottom of what I said saying ignore the above.
Excellent news! Gonna be great to see one running .
