Nice to see an iconic engine brought back to life.  But it's going to leave a large void at the museum.  The article mentioned that the museum is reassessing its collection - I hope this isn't a sign of trouble.  The museum is well worth a stop if you're in the area, and it's along a very busy main line.

On former NYC track, too! Much of the Indiana Northeastern Railroad is made up of former NYC lines.

Hey Rich, I had seen a video some time ago by a YouTube personality who did a tour of the museum. The one thing he believed was that the tender that was behind 3001 was not the actual tender for it, but the one behind that one. He had cited that 3001's tender had been popped behind some Pennsylvania engine, and when it was stored I think he said Altoona, the storage shed or engine house caught on fire. This resulted in 3001's tender getting warped by the heat. He went on to say that the tender behind 3001 was in fact the tender to the Pennsylvania engine. It would probably take me a bit to find the video, but I figured I would ask if you had heard that story.

Curious to know what shop could or will handle the dirty work, ….I’ve never been to Ft. Wayne’s place,….do they have the facilities to handle such a restoration? …..

Pat, I want to say Hot Water had answered a similar question about the facilities at Fort Wayne pertaining to 3985 Challenger going there. I know that someone had posted a very long reply in which Jack had picked all the bits apart so he could answer them one by one. I am trying to find that post now.

3985 to Illinois

Pat, Ignore most of the above as it is Illinois not Indiana. Sorry folks, my bad. Also, Hot Water does highlight some stuff just not if the shop has the facilities.

To be sure certain portions will be done by other vendors off site, ….some of us were spitballing where the actual deconstruction/construction might take place,…..

They haven't restored / repaired nearly as many locomotives as you have.

IIRC, the 765 was restored there.

Models don’t count!……😁…….I’ve only worked on one real one, …ol #60 on the Black Water & Western …..my grandfather was a volunteer mechanic when that tourist attraction was just getting its feet wet, ……I’d go with him, and stay by his side, doing the heavy work he couldn’t do anymore, ……like I said, I’ve never been to FWHS, so I have no clue what goes on there,…..good to know they can handle it.

Don't know how/where you came up with THAT, but 3985 did NOT go to Fort Wayne! The donated locomotives from the UP went to Silvis, Ill.
