Plastic gears are smooth when are working and in the same time a kind of "fuse" all the stress is on them and when is too much they brake. Now traction tires put even more stress on them when the speed is suddenly increased or decreased. to extend the mechanical life span, speed slowly and vise versa. I thin the Williams 773 gearbox is pretty similar.

You can buy precision metal gears from Stock Drive, both metric and American. I would suggest you replace the plastic stuff with metal.
I'm kind of surprised Lionel would use plastic gears for this engine. Thought the experiment of plastic gears was left back in the 70's. Hope no one is using plastic gears today in their 1500.00 engines.
