I have a first gen TIU (no label underneath) running v4.3.  It’s always been a bear to add engines to it, and now it seems even worse?  I have all four outputs going to separate tracks.  After about 5 tries I was able to add my NJ Transit PCC (PS2), but when I apply power to the the track the sounds come on like it’s in conventional, but when I address it in the remote, it starts to play nice.  But then I tried adding a PS2 Subway, and couldn’t get anything.  Tried recovering it, the remote said it recovered, but couldn’t add it.  Then I tried an Atlas O PS3 Amtrak P42, and the system couldn’t detect that either.  I’m running old school Lionel tubular track, and while old, isn’t rusty or anything.  Is there a fault with the TIU, or was that first gen just not that great and I need to update to one of the new WTIUs?  Thanks!

Your engine powered up in conventional because it missed the watchdog signal for DCS. It does happen and usually hitting Start Up works.

Rather than getting into a lot of detail as to how your layout is configured or wired. I would start by getting an extra piece of track and setting it near the TIU and power it using Only Fixed One. Disconnect what is presently on Fixed One Out as well as the Outs on the other channels and power just that one section of track. That’s all that’s there for the TIU to search for an engine. Try re adding your engines.

If you have no luck. Leave Fixed One powered and try another channel. If you get them to add. Do a signal test. With only one section of track you should yield a 10. If not get everything squeaky clean as far as track, rollers and wheels and test again. You really can’t work on the layout itself to you get an engine added. Then signal test the whole layout.
