I was passing through Macon, GA just a few minutes ago.. Saw one of these guys pass over me on the Hwy. It was brown/white, couldn't seem much more than that because it was getting dark... but I'm sure it was a new heritage unit. Any ideas on what it was. I was driving to fast to catch a cab # or anything like that.
Very Impressive. That's a heck of an advertisement for Norfolk Southern and the EMD SD70ACE as well. And a sizable investment. How much does a brand spankin' new SD70ACE go for these days?

Except about half of the Heritage fleet (give or take) are GE's!
As far as investment, these were locomotives already in the purchase pipeline, they weren't bought specifically for the Heritage fleet. The only real investment is in the cost of the special painting, which will easily be made back in buzz, advertising and goodwill.

From Lionel's facebook page in reference to the NS Heritage Locos;
"Get your roundhouses ready Lionel (and American Flyer!) Fans! We've been taking close notes on these units and they'll be here in the Vol. 2 Catalog!"
There is some room for interpretation from this post, but its possible we will not have to wait till next year to see more S Gauge (at least in catalog form) from Lionel.

Advantage: Lionel.
They have the SD70 at least somewhere in the development stage while MTH is just starting up.

rusty traque, mike wolf had pre-production samples of the premier sd70ace, es44, H.O. sd70ace, and railking sd70ace at norfolk southern heritage days in spencer, north carolina. he also had a brochure with ALL of the heritage engines in it, including high rail and scale wheel item numbers. so to say that lionel has the advantage isn't a true statement. also what difference does it make in who has the advantage????? as long as we can get the engine we want in either lionel or MTH, what difference does it make?????..............................rogerw.

The brochure only lists the O and HO versions. As I recall, it came out shortly after Mike Wolf made his SHS aquisition announcement.
Lionel has the Flyer SD70 already in development for several months now, MTH has not yet begun, or has just begun. Also, according to Mike Wolf's announcement we're looking at 18 months before the S Scale SD70's show up.
Now, it may take Lionel 18 months to get their version out. We just don't know. From a consumer point of view, delivery dates tend to be fluid.
Lionel has a price point for the SD70's, MTH does not. Plus, seeing that S scale SD70's have alrady been cataloged by Lionel, the adavantage so far goes to them.
The real test is who gets them on the street first.
Personally, I have no preference of MTH or Lionel at this point in time. Frankly, I'd be just as happy if American Models was doing the Heritage units.
I'm aware of the highs and lows of both Lionel and MTH and the competition between the two will be interesting. I envision buying products from both companies.

I look forward to seeing the Lionel Norfolk Southern Heritage engines as well as the Union Pacific Heritage SD70ACe's. As I have said before, S Scale is the "Diamond in the Rough" for the 21st Century! In the future, S Scale will be the fastest growing scale in model trains. I am seriously considering moving to S Scale.

Maybe this will help hold Lionel's feet to the fire on their production schedule on these engines. On a side note, I see on the shipping schedule that while the Texas Special ALCo PAs are slated for this month the passenger cars have been moved to later in the year. Lionel, please don't mess this up like you did with the D&RGW set you made where a lot of people were left out in the cold with engines and no passenger cars!

At least the SD70ACe's shouldn't have to go through the "growing pains" the U33C's went through.
