Got an email from MTH announcing the unveiling of the Heritage Series Locomotives at the North Carolina Transport Museum July 3, and the 4th. Seems like a pretty good celebration and photo opportunity for those that care to attend.

There is also a reception on Monday night at the Salisbury train station that Mike will be attending.  I am planning to attend the reception and the event on the 3rd.  I seldom get an opportunity to see that many trains (and therefore engines) and am quite exited about this event.

Paul, are you planning to attend?  If so, would love the chance to meet you in person.

Happy railroading,

Don

I wish I could be there, it sounds like NS is really going to be doing this up right. We had vacation plans for Hilton Head before this was announced, but after receiving a call from my wife's family yesterday evening we are flying to Minnesota today. Her mother took a turn for the worse and isn't expected to make it to the weekend. Hope you take and post a lot of pictures!

In the June issue of "Railpace" magazine there is a spread of 9 of NS's "Heritage" engines, including some shots by NS's company photographer Casey Thompson. On the back cover is a stunning photo by Thompson of a Central of Georgia loco exiting Natural Tunnel, near Duffield, VA. It gets my vote as one of the best train pics I've seen.

Drove by the Museum about an hour ago.  The entry gate was down with a car pulled behind it.

The other thing that I had heard but did not post earlier is the the line of sight from the road is to be obscured by a consist of coaches.  If so they were not moved into place yet.  But I did see two lines of cars in consist that have been assembled else where on the property that were NOT there this morning.

They have erected a make-sift fence along the road frontage preventing anyone from just walking onto the property except at the entrance to ticket booths.

There were NOT any engines that could be seen around/ and/or in front of round house.  The units must still be in the Linwood Yards where they ave been gathering.

I will have to go way again in the morning.

My wife an I just returned from Spencer and I must say that of all the train related things I have done since I became interested in trains at age 13 (53 years ago), this event may well be the highlight!  If anyone is close enough to drive there and are on the fence, by all means, jump off the fence and make your way to Spencer.  The opportunity to see so many new modern locomotives with such well researched and authentic livery will most  likely never present itself again.

All I can say is - WOW!

WELL DONE, NORFOLK SOUTHERN CORP. AND THE NC TRANSPORTATION MUSEUM!  AND THANKS!

Happy railroading,

Don

For those wanting pictures of the event and the engines. the editor of Classic Trains magazine was at the event on the 3rd and said they would have a special publication featuring the NS Heritage  Fleet that would be released by the end of July.  Several professional photographers I spoke with said that was likely true because they would have to have submissions to the magazine by July 6.

What a nice surprise I had today!  I have been kicking myself since the 3rd for not buying the 20 pin 30th anniversary set souvenir that PRRronbh posted a picture of above.  Well one of my friends that also attended the event gave me a set today for my birthday.

Color me happy!

Happy railroading,

Don
