Many would consider the 4-8-4 steam's high-water mark. Of course NYC fans consider the Niagara the best of the breed. I have been a fan of the Niagara since I was a kid and owned a couple of Bachmann HO versions. I primarily run MTH RK steam and always though it odd that Mike Wolf never did a RK Imp Niagara. This omission from the otherwise extensive MTH RK line up left a scale version of this locomotive my only option for an O-Gauge model. I picked up this MTH Premiere PS2 beauty used for a good price. It needed some TLC out of the box. The front axle on the pilot truck was bent - easily fixed by gripping the wheel with a pair of channel locks and gently bending back to straight. It threw a traction tire on the initial test run, but fortunately the box came with the spares - another straight-forward fix. The FW heater cold water pump was broken off, but a simple super glue repair did the trick. I also replaced the old Ni-Cad battery with a BCR. Finally, it ran pretty rough out of the box. A lube job with Labelle products and some break in time has it running nice and smooth. I was worried since this model has the old PS2 board that I understand to be problematic, but I'm happy to report all functions work perfect (I run DCS).

Two of my favorites... first, a NYC Niagara (as a NYC fan, an obvious choice )
And the classic SP GS4 Northern...

All very nice. Now that you have a pair of 2-rail Northerns sneaking in, I shall add a few more. My Daylight GS-2 is in 17/64, and features a silver-soldered copper boiler of almost 1/8' wall. You would think I was trying to build a live steamer!
Main frame started out 1"x1" brass bar, back when brass wasn't $30 a pound. Tender trucks are nickel silver, from my patterns.

Let me see if I can find one more Northern:
This is an All Nation Mountain, converted to a GS-1. Boiler was extended fore and aft, a new frame was machined, and an Adams tender was attached, with my specialty riveted sides. Note the BoxPok main driver. It has a Henry Pearce gearbox, which has to be among the best ever.
I have a few more, including a converted Lionel FEF, and somewhere lost in my photos is a Rock Island monster.

My iPad showed only two of Sam's 2-rail beauties in the post above mine. Those deserve a coffee table book! Very nice! I will look again tomorrow when I am more awake.
Stunning photos of some fantastic Northerns! Thank you all for sharing
I'm sure there's more out there. Would love to see some contributions from the traditional / semi-scale crowd too. Let's see 'em!

I don't have a large collection of steam (too expensive), but I have two Northern's in my collection -- ATSF #2913 and CNW H1 #3018. I may get an ATSF #3751 if I can find one at a reasonable price.

The Pennsy did not have any 4-8-4 steamers. Would a 4-4-4-4 do? You could look at it as a 4-(4-4)-4.

OK... @CAPPilot and @GG1 4877 win today’s creative counting prize. Two beautiful (if honorary) 4-8-4’s

What scale are your locomotives? HO? All very nice! My HO T1 is a Bowser.
Thanks Jonathan,
They are all HO.

It's funny. Someone had asked about my Pennsy S2 Turbine. I always thought is was pretty much a Northern on steroids because of the extra firebox support from the three-axle trailing truck and the need for more turn-in support requiring the three-axle lead truck.

Matt,
Well, if that's true, I'm adding these two!
PRR S-1 and S-2!

The S1 was designed as a 6-4-4-6 so maybe it should not be here. The S2, however, was initially designed as a 4-8-4 but restrictions during WWII on light steel alloys increased the S2's weight until six-wheel leading and trailing trucks were needed. So it should be an honorary 4-8-4.

Here is Santa Fe 3751 on the G&O. This is an early brass 3rd Rail model that was purchased used. It was converted to TMCC. The passenger cars are aluminum Williams 21 inch cars. NH Joe

Here is UP 844 pulling the 49er on the G&O. This engine belongs to a friend. It is an early brass Williams model running in conventional mode. I don't know who made the 49er Special passenger cars. NH Joe
The photos above show UP 844 crossing the original Norris Falls bridge. The original bridge was destroyed when a tree fell on the G&O on December 30, 2014. The second Norris Falls bridge that was made from wood is currently being replaced by a galvanized steel bridge. The G&O crew plans to have the new bridge operational sometime this spring.
