The engines used in Mercury service were Dryfus streamlined hudsons.  Some had the fin, some didn't.  Skirting was different from 20th Century limited, more like the Empire State Express.  Engines were painted overall dark grey vrs the lighter grey for the 20th Century limited and the two toned black/stainless steel of the NYSE.

Actually the original Mercury used a streamline Pacific and some heavyweight cars modified with streamline details. I think they were unique to that original train. 3rd Rail has offered the original engine and cars. The PT tender was used on the Empire State Express was well as the Mercury in later years.
