I was asked by my cousin Arnold who is a member of the New York Ontario &Wetern Historical Society to rendesvou at Steamtown to see the progress on the Societies recently aquired 44T diesel, a mini backshop tour, and a simulated coal mine tour up in Nay Aug Park, Scranton PA.
So I arrived on a dreary misty Saturday April 13th.

Its amazing how many of us modelrrs think a switcher is small...until you get up close and personal with the real deal!
Entrance to the restored "Brooks mine" tour up in Nay Aug Park. Built in 1902 by Reese Brooks, it was used as a training school to see if the kids in Scranton wanted to work in the coal mines. It ony goes 150ft into the top of the mountain in the park and has real coal seams inside.
A voluntter group on the weekends explain the various methods used to extract coal from the mines ascwell as the minimal safety gear being used until the late 1960's.
A restored coal truck
Right next is a restored original passenger car from a late 1800 gravity railroad that used to exist between Hawly and Pittstown, Pa. The car is made all out if wood. Predecessor to steam powered trains.
After the coal mine tour, there was to have been a hot dog cookout but weather and not many particupants showed up. So we went to Cosmos [ across from Krispy Kreme donuts] and picked up a couple of cheesesteaks. After lunch, we took a trip to the Delaware Lackawanna shops in Scranton. PA.
