O scale Scratchbuilt Coal Tipple made from Styrofoam Sheet

Here is a very simple O scale Coal Tipple made from 3/16 inch Styrofoam Sheet and stripwood. It will have interior detailing and lighting. Not all details shown.

 Overall dimensions:  88 feet x 150 feet x 128 feet

The structure is constructed as 4 separate buildings which "bolt" together.  The "headhouse", "screening" building, car "loading chute" building and "maintenance" building.  The "conveyor" section is not shown (to be completed).

The structure can very easily be disassembled and stored in individual boxes when not in use. The interior of each building has separate removable floors which will be detailed and painted. Interior and exterior LED lighting will also be added. Not shown is a stairway to the upper level and coal chutes for loading hopper cars.

Yes Styrofoam board is very fragile.  I always apply a coat of carpenters glue to all edges.  I also use a very sharp razor knife and a steel straight edge to score the foamcore board when cutting. Do not apply a lot of pressure.  Several light strokes is best.

I also use wood strip to reinforce the corners and edges of the building walls.

I first reinforce with wood strips.  Then I paint both sides and edges to prevent warping. Once both sides are painted the "warp" in the foam board disappears.
