Glad that you have made it! I've got 10 more years till i can, and I expect that one of two things will happen before then. 1) Social Security will not run out of money, or 2) it will. I don't expect that Congress will "fix" SS, as they don't have to worry about their retirement---

I retired 8 years ago and it seems like only yesterday.  Between trains (and active in the TCA), golf, serving on the board of a professional theater, and family (not necessarily in that order!) the time flies by.  I find the calendar on my iPhone to be a life saver along with my contact list and E-mail capability.  

Glad your joining the club. It's wonderful believe me. I only know what day it is when the cruise ship comes in on Thursday. Don

Some of us are put out to pasture medically long before the so called official date. We make it work. Oh wait...

It' barely been 9 months that I have been retired.  I don't know when I found time to work.  I do know I have enjoyed the trains more (in colder weather).  Now the yard work calls, etc etc etc.

I retired over twenty-years ago. No regrets either. I've all the time in the world to run trains and enjoy my family time. No grandsons yet, however, I have four grand-daughters that love trains.

Must be the Pride of America pulling in/out of Kauai.   If I wasn't retired I wouldn't have known that!

Hi Don, Visited Maui about 13 years ago and it was great, maybe time for another. Retired about a month or so ago and I can't believe  how much work interfered with my fun. The trains are looking good and running good now that I can give them some time. Enjoy your retirement $oo Line and Don you lucky bas%$#&%$ for living and retiring  to Maui, one beautiful place. 

Hi Don, Yeah, a very idyllic picture to represent what everything in retirement should be like. But, unfortunately, a lot of us are not favored to be in this type of setting in our non-working years. Seeing our life time of savings being squandered by crooked people (readoliticians and bad banks) and lost medical coverage's and illnesses, this setting only comes to us thru our dreams. But on the nicer side, at least we have more time, albeit less money to devote to our hobbies, whatever they are. $oo, enjoy it as long as you can. I know I am.

Been Retired about 8 years now, everyday is like a saturday. Enjoying everyday now, rain, sun, or snow. Will hopefully make our 3rd trip to hawaii in another year or so.

I retired 6 years ago the first of this month.  Now I am enjoying my best talent which is Natural Born Lazy.  It is nice to have more time to play with them trains.

Go ahead and enjoy it, now that you can set your own schedule. It's been 5 months for me now, and I'm enjoying it. Now I can't wait until I have a layout to play with my trains.

thanks to all whom replied with well wishes. as most of you now we can focus more on the scenery aspect on our layout.

yes I'm fortunate that my wife loves trains as much as I do and seeing she has the artistic talent it leaves me to constructing the buildings but we work as a team.

we have amassed quite a few scenery items and today as we were in a nursery looking for plants came across bags of what appears to be a form of lichen in a 12"x12" bag for 12.00

I still have the logging loop to complete yet it was an after thought and a yard area but hey if up until 4am who cares were living the dream.

to those just begining best advice I can give is start paying yourself now towards retirement it arrives sooner than you think.

Congratulations!

I retired last December, and don’t miss work at all; especially the daily 37-mile-each-way drive I had. I have done a couple of minor design jobs on the side since then, but I mainly work on my layout - practically fulltime - and really like that!

As has been implied above, the hardest thing is keeping track of the days of the week. Unfortunately, there are no cruise ships, or worse, surfer beauties on the lake where we live, so the only way I can tell that is Thursday (as Don does) is because that is our pizza day! Otherwise, everyday is Saturday.

My wife just retired after teaching 37 years here in NJ.  I unfortunately have about another year to go.  I'm looking forward to getting back into trains and need a new house with a basement to get started. 

Don, great picture of that cruise ship, I 've seen it a few times myself.  We'll be in Maui next April and hope to look you up then.

I have 12.5 years to go and the value of my house has tanked to the point I won't break even on it unless I work till I'm 80...

I can't see doing that so I'm not sure what I will do.

For now I just slip into the basement periodically to run the trains and let time slide back to the 60's
