Allentown First Frost Train Meet

The always optimistically named Allentown (PA) ‘Spring Thaw” OGR Forum Breakfast is planned for Saturday, February 25th at The Ritz Barbeque Restaurant on the grounds of the Allentown Fairgrounds and Farmers Market. (Use 17th and Chew Streets in Allentown on your GPS).

The Ritz will open for us at 7 a.m. While there are no reservations necessary it is helpful if you would ‘copy and add your name” below if you plan on joining the guys … as well as the name or number of guests you might have join you. It helps The Ritz plan on staffing needs as this is an hour earlier than they normally open.

NOTE: Forumite extraordinaire TedsGG1 WILL HAVE the advance tix available at the breakfast.

NOTE 2: The Spring Thaw Meet, sponsored by Allentown Train Meet Associates, runs both Saturday and Sunday, Feb.25-26. https://allentowntrainmeet.com/

Unfortunately, I have to back out tomorrow as my parents need me to take them to an event they would like to attend which is too far away for them to drive.  I'll have to head up Sunday if at all.  I hope everyone enjoys the breakfast and show!

Is the technology in these things today generating interest with younger people?

No.  It's just the fact that they're trains.  They're just as appealing today as they've always been, whether with modern bells and whistles or old fashioned ones.

The technology may help keep the younger folks interested once they're hooked, but the fact that they would see model trains got the kids to the meet in the first place -- with help from their parents or other inspired adults of course.

This is why we don't have too much too worry about the future of our hobby.  It's taking care of itself quite nicely.

Let's keep them coming.

Hi all I saw was many people parent kids' babies showed up and almost everyone coming out had many trains or accessories walking out with big smiles on their faces also saw a lot of purchases of old Kline engines and passenger cars. I procrastinated on a MTH set of Norfolk and Western went to lunch and came back guy had sold them right after I had walked away. when you see something, you want you get it immediately or forget knowing it won't be there when you return! At breakfast at Ritz BBQ met Vinnie n Ben and Gunrunner from njhighrailers !Alan

One non-purchase I didn’t regret was a LVRR RK tank car.  The vendor had four that were painted to match various LV diesel schemes.  They originally retailed for $33 to $43.  I picked out a snowbird and one that matched the red/yellow scheme (30-7349) that was only applied to one RS3 and one GP9.  The vendor said he had 4 and they were $100.  I surmised it was $100 for the four so I asked how much for two.  When he said he could go as low as $175 for two, it dawned on me that he meant $100 each.  I really like that red/yellow car, but I don’t like it for $100.

Bob,

I was looking at those same tank cars. I really liked the white (snowbird) model. But a $100. I passed too. He said they normally will go for $130.

Translated that means I'd like to sell them for $130.  If they "normally" go for $130, odd that he'd offer them at $100.   One just sold at the sane price of $29 on eBay, this guy is dreaming!

The breakfast was great although we didnt take any pics   I sat with Alan MAncus and his wife and John from Long Island   Chuck was in spitting distance at the next table which I almost did laughing that he went back to ordering the Foo Foo Pancakes   He thought he would fool us and not get the whipped cream.

As for the show it was probably the best one in a long time  I purchased two items   Both of them didnt work but I knew that when I bought them  An MTH DMIR Yellowstone was the prize
