A fella at work brought in his boyhood train - a brass Berkshire. An older neighbor had given it to him when he was about 6 back in 1960. All he had was the locomotive and tender plus two scale boxcars and some track. An odd 'gift' for a young boy. The man had a large layout.

Evidently he never actually played with it yet hung onto it all these years thinking of passing it to his 3 year old grandson soon.

I offered to help him with a started set down the line and suggested a Thomas for now.

Have no idea what he has and didn't see any mane or markings on the locomotive. Voltage from the tender with wires and plugs. He said he thought it smoked but I couldn't see anything down the stack. Any idea what it might be?

Could be about anything.   Post some photos, including the underside.    1960 if new then, couild include a Max Grey import.    Those are actually pretty nice.    Mostly all 2 rail steamers pickup from one rail on the tender and the other on the engine hence the connecting wires.   1 for power, other/s may be for a tender backup light.

Didn't have a camera with me when he brought it in so sorry - no pics.

It was fairly well-detailed for its age and had a few detail pieces dislodged from storage. He said its been in his garage since the mid sixties. It was used when he received it.

I encouraged him to dust it off and display it at home. If he should decide to sell it I'd be glad to post it here for you guys too see.

I have a MTH Scale Hudson on my desk at the real estate office and show it to people whenever I can. Our club was set up at the office over Christmas 2013 and was a big hit. Now that I'm working there, I'll be the resident engineer for 2014.

It is probably not worth much in todays market.

Easily worth $300 if Lobaugh, and on eBay they often get driven up to near a grand.  Here is what the Lobaugh looks like.  To identify yours, turn it upside down and look for four machine screws holding a plate or two for each axle.  Prewar Lobaugh uses a single plate for each axle; postwar uses two, as the prototype.  Frame itself is cast bronze.
