OK, I'm confused...as usual...and I can't seem to find the OGR Forum policy on Ebay () embedded in any support area, so......

I thought a posting such as "Great Engine House Buy On E-bay" in the Trains Forum, 3rail, was a no-no??  Or is that only related to the For Sale forum topic??

A couple of months ago I participated in a forum discussion about an authors frustration over the bidding practices on Ebay...as big, or bigger, a purveyor of trains as any sponsor of OGR Forum.  All of a sudden the whole thread was gone without explanation.  I subsequently posted a Forum Suggestion that it would be helpful to me, et al?, to have the thread-ripper leave a brief notice as to why the forum was pulled in order to educate forumites...like me...as to the no-no, the reason for termination.

The response...highly rude IMHO...was in essence 'We don't talk about Ebay on the forum, they're not a sponsor, they don't merit discussion, and we're not an Ebay service.'  In other words, since they don't pay, they can't play?  (As PO'd as I was at the response...caustic, but not at all considerate...I blew away my own topic, BTW.)

So here comes this forum topic which sez 'Want a deal?  Go to this Ebay auction!'  WTH???  So now we're going to play Ebay watchdogs??? and provide alert-service on the forum??

And if we're going to give Ebay this sort of entry to the forum...cheap price alerts...then what about every struggling retailer (our own store in a struggling city/state economy) who'd dearly love the 'free' advertising option that Ebay...their worst nightmare if not main competitor...is then given?????   And, I believe, your guidelines for the For Sale forum state that it is NOT to be use as a retailer's advertising medium.

Sorry for the morning rant.  Sometimes I get so confused by policies/rules/standards, apparent or published....and then observations/practices/liberties/violations...I have this underlying fear when contemplating a thread topic or response of my own lest I cross a line that seems somewhat dotted or faded.

...and the first cup of coffee this morning was horrible...........................which probably explains everything.

Over on the Tinplate forum, the subject of ebay often comes up as a point of reference or information.  For example, someone will see something on ebay and then start a thread, asking if anyone has seen anything like this or knows anything about this kind of thing.  A lively and informative discussion usually follows, in which some of the really experienced and knowledgeable members will share some arcane Tinplate facts with the rest of us.

I would certainly object to using the forums to promote ebay, but it would seem a shame to outlaw any reference to it.   Like it or not, it is a fact of life for the majority of train collectors and operators.

The "Great Engine House Buy" thread may seem to have been over the line as an ebay price alert promotion.  On the other hand, we do have to admit that it did act as a service to members, and one member decided to act on it and benefited from it...

Just my 1.5 cents.

Agreed. Those of us who spend much (most?) of our time on the Tinplate Forum seem to have things under control,  as it were,  when it comes to Ebay. As hojack mentions above, most of the references are in passing for informational purposes only, and hopefully don't rise to the level of the examples detailed in Allan's post.

They do not rise to that level.  There's a big difference there that probably is fairly unique to the collecting community as opposed to a focus on eBay buyers/sellers/policies/problems.

Yes, that thread was a no-no, but it's apparently gone now.

Do you think we--as moderators--really have the time to closely watch each and every thread and each and every post that appears here, given the volume of posts on a daily basis?

No, believe me, I DO understand this.  The success and growth of the forum makes moderation an increasingly difficult, time-consuming task.  And that's all the more reason why a periodic review or reminder or establishment of policy to us forumites might be an appropriate 'jerk on the leash'.

If you happen to spot a thread that you feel violates that policy, just send an alert notification to the moderators.

See, I didn't even know we could do this!!  Even at 67 I have much to learn!

All that's really required is common sense...a commodity seemingly in somewhat short supply at times.

Agreed...and as Voltaire said, 'Common sense is not so common.'

BTW, Allan, I certainly did not want to get Don (author of the engine house thread) in trouble.  I know he posted it with the best of intentions.  I know he would NEVER self-promote an auction of his own.  It was the nature of the thread that troubled me.  I think many of us think of the forum as a random conversation among town friends in the general store sitting around the potbellied stove, not often giving a lot of thought about what we're about to throw into the discussion.  So these no-no's pop up now and then.  We deserve a 'DiNozzo' when they do.

Thanks for clarifying.
