Open Hogwarts Express Passenger Car?

if i remember correctly there should be two windows which are tabs on in each side of the car that you push in and then you can lift the roof off. not easy. you need 4 hands

That is correct, 2 windows near the front and two windows near the back need to pushed in and then it will lift off.

They are the smaller windows, not the bigger ones. They push ok hard and it is a pain to get the roof off. However, once you get it off once, the second time becomes easier.

Here is the instruction page from the Lionel manual that shows which windows to press. Of course, it does help if you have 3 hands with 6 fingers on each.

I had devised a few incantations of my own, but the craft stick tip in the jcstudiosinc link did the trick.  Nicole, the diagram you provided would have saved me many broken craft sticks.

That's the official Lionel description, but they're all wet!  If you ever tried to use those instructions to open one of these, you'd know what I mean.   Texas Pete has the link to the easy way to get them apart.
