I've been working on the basement lately so I can build the layout. It's an open room 30x50. Does anyone know of a track company that will make custom track? I contacted ross and they can't make the outside third rail track. I was thinking of going with Gargraves. I have a few sections of track that Gargraves made that every fifth tie is longer. I'd rather pay extra to buy the track pre made so the track will work take less time. If I can get the track made, I can build the layout with track in a few days. If I have to make that outside rail myself, it will slow the tracking down.

If Ross wont do it I doubt youll find one that will. Atlas 2 Rail track is the one you should use
I don't anyone ever made outside 3rd track. If you can get more of the gargraves with the extended tie, that would be great. From the photos I have seen, guys would screw flat head brass screws into the extended tie or the benchwork, and then solder a brass HO rail to the to top of the screw. NS ho rail would work better probably.
Since it is a very old technology, it is going to be hard to find.
GG for extended ties.

I emailed them today about the extended ties, hopefully, they can make them. I'll be ready to start tracking soon.
Not worth the effort. O scale has too many sizes that can hit the 3rd rail and cover. If you plan on operating scale diesels , 57' + freight cars, GG1's, forgetta-bout- it.
My clown shoe Lo V's took out a few sections in the past. Good Luck!
I had to make a dedicated subway layout only.

The reason the third rail is in the center is to avoid the problem of the hot rail switching sides in reverse loops, etc.. If you want to put up with that problem, it seems more practical to just go to two rail. Look better too.

I tried that once before but somehow the coffee pots and cows crossed the bridge.

It is no problem, the shoes are on both sides of the car.
the third rail layouts I have seen and ones I have seen photos of, do not cover the third rail.
Be much easier and more realistic to just go 2 rail.....or just plain old 3 rail.

I know it won't look very correct, but if I add one to my layout for my NYC S-2, I'll just get HO flex track and take the rails out and glue them to the edge of my 3R Atlas track ties. Then it'll have the look, be easy to bend, and be shorter then the O rail head so nothing will catch. But that is a ways away.
