Joe,

Like you I really like the NS units.  I'm confident we'll see another run announced in the not too distant future.

Thanks for the info on Polk's...

Somebody tell me what's in the window? ( and I'm afraid to ask)

(P.S.= Polk's opening back up Tuesday.)

Mike, I recently asked the folks at OMI if they are planning on staying in O Scale to which they stated most definitely yes. They also stated they want to begin planning for the next offering as soon as the dust clears from this run.

I'm hoping for ES44AC's the most but something in the SD70 series will be great too, possibly Spartan cabs? I'd wager the next offering will be a new run of ACe's though with a heavy influence on NS Heritage units.

Joe did you check with OMI to see if they have any NS units that were not claimed?

John,

Yeah, I heard the same thing from Brian and Missy.

The NS units are definitely all gone.   moral of the story, you snooze you lose.

Mike,

A friend and I ran your video through a Mac Mini to a 55" Sony LED TV.

Wow!!!  I'm really impressed.
Some people would rather see a little dirt on them, but that freshly painted look is fine too.

And a quick follow up, after some investigation I found the cause. The tower gearbox on the lead truck in 4837 has a good wobble and source of the buzzing.  The other gear towers and gear boxes look to run smoothly and are relatively quiet.  The problematic gearbox also felt warm to the touch compared to the others after some running.  I'll likely have to place an order for some spare parts to fix the issue and get her back running on the rails.  For now enjoy the above.

Not to mention that it's an ACe... They did a pretty nice job converting it, but to me the lack of many of the CN specific details is too great to spend that kind of money on it. The different walkways and different louvers do make a big difference. Granted I spend (way too much) time on the real ones and these missing details would stick out like a sore thumb to me.  I really wish I had the funds to have gotten two of 'em at the time...

CN 8844 and 8830 look to have the original vertical louver configuration.

Rick

They must have been delivered with the EMD standard and later modified. In later photos, they've got the horizontal ones. I stand corrected, we didn't really get many of the early 8800's down in the US when they were brand new as they pretty much kept them captive in Canada.

CN_Hogger

Yeah, definitely agree.  This unit was on eBay earlier last year, also had a spartan cab SD70.  Similar cosmetic issues with the paint/details.

OK here are a flood of more photos.  Started by weathering as delivered, rusty coupler and wheels.  Adding some soot around air intake/exhaust and fans.  Did some pulling tests comparing MTH (UP and BNSF) to OMI.  On a static drawbar pull test 3 OMI registered 1400 grams, 3 MTH registered 1550.  On a drag test, OMI can pull stationary MTH but very slowly.  MTH can crawl away a bit faster than stationary OMI.  Both actively pulling MTH starts to break OMI lose before breaker trips.  Winner by a hair is MTH due to weight, as delivered they were a bit heavier.  To even it up, OMI can be weighted to match MTH.  Lots of similar photos but different focal lengths.  You can see near the end where the focal length plays a part in showing the beefiness of the rear end, one is looks fat the other looks thin.  Photos of truck and frame details comparing the two.  And in general excessive shutter clicking just because.

Thanks for your additional contribution, Mike.

The performance info is appreciated. I'm into power; I've got no use for non-powered models. I don't care how good a unit looks, if it can't do it's job.

We all know MTH's failings, re: certain details; but, those front corner shots of the BNSF and WP units, look pretty good. It's the small things that really finish off a good looking model. MTH's statements, in their catalogs, gives a hint at what they try to achieve, for the money.

They're not aiming for perfection; and their prices reflect that. Overland takes your wallet; they have a higher standard to live up to...

Your squad of new ACe's look pretty good; I especially like the rear shot.

Thanks.

Rick

M Pitogo,

Have you checked the weight on any of your OMI SD70ace's? I'm curious as to what they weigh. I have two SD70macs from an earlier run that weigh 6.14 lbs which seem to be a little light and probably should weigh somewhere around 7 lbs.

I have an OMI GP60m from a 1994 run that weighs in at 5.21 lbs and an OMI SD40-2 that weighs in at 5.41 lbs, and an 8-40BW weighing in at 5.14 lbs.

The OMI GP60m feels just right at 5.21 lbs and weighs more than an Atlas GP60m weighing 4.64 lbs.

I think large loco's like the 70mac's, dash 9's, 70ace's, should weigh nothing less than 7 lbs. With OMI having ball bearings on the axles and gearboxes, they should be able to support more weight. I think 7 lbs minimum and up to 8 lbs is what I'll be experimenting with for my loco's.

I'm just curios as to what your SD70ace's weigh?

Thanks for all the photos you just posted, everything looks good.

Michael, Fantastic info and photos.    Thanks for sharing.

I hate to be that critical, that screw sticks out like a sore thumb! Probably because of the super close-up shot? Looks like it's in the windshield. Might be tempted to paint it white?

They need some aspirin on the dash to look any more realistic.

Otherwise, another Wow.

Mike,

Thanks for providing that info. I think adding a little weight to them is in order. I think 7 lbs would be a good weight for those.

What mix of cars will be included in your 101 car goal? I know you have plenty of the Lionel Husky stacks which are quite heavy and 50-60 of those would require some serious power especially on a layout with grades. Keep us posted on your results.

Going to look at adding 1 lbs 1oz get it to 7.

Stack train is on its own and at 45 cars is monstrously heavy.

For the 101 freight cars I am replicating a mixed freight train.

It includes MTH 50' Hi-Cubes, MTH Center beam Flats, MTH Gondola coil car, Atlas 50' 6" Box Cars, Atlas 60' Auto Parts single and double door box cars, Lionel Vision ethanol tank cars, Lionel 53' PS-5 Gondola, scratch built tank car, Weaver Airslide hoppers, various makes of covered hoppers and other stuff in the mix... will update as I remember em.   Almost all are weathered, some by Industrial Models some by other weatherers and some by me.

I cast 17oz lead blocks and glued them to the existing weight in fuel tanks.  Weight is now a mighty 7 lbs each and perfectly capable.  Any more would add little if any extra traction.  On the drive side, the model only has ball bearings on truck side frame journals and on the gear box for the wheels axles.  The idler and transfer gears have bronze bearings.  The extra weight should be fine carried by the ball bearings.  The only area where there can or maybe an issue is the increased load on the drive line gears and axles.

Did any of you put DCC into these locomotives?

With school and work taking most of my time, I've finally started to think about getting it done.  I was planning on putting DCC into one unit first, and see how it goes.  I was going to order supplies from Tony's Train Exchange, can you recommend the best decoder to go with the SD70ACe?  I'm drawing power from a 10amp NCE system.

I briefly opened one of shells, and it's only a couple of screws, that part is not complicated at all.  I have one SD70ACe from the 2005 or 2006 run, and one CSX from the most recent run.

I still have to open up the older unit, to see what differences their may be with the inner workings.
