The most obvious issue that I have with my MTH scale F3s are the disgustingly oversized number boards.

So I got to thinking if the P&D Hobby replacement boards would fit...

I ordered a set and took a hammer & screw driver to the shells and whatya know?

These units are on their way to becoming 3500-series passenger Fs. Swap numbers and fill in dynamic brake grids and we should be good to go.

Anyone have an idea about fixing the short wheelbase?

That same NYC MTH engine is part of my NYC motive power and what annoys me about it is the little "nubs" that supposedly represent lift rings (hah!), the small "pimple" the should be a class light, and the "wart" at the bottom of the cab sill that I'm guessing means to depict the EMD builders plate.

What I can't figure out is how to best remove these poor representations without marring the rest of the factory paint. I've got scale lift rings but am at a loss as to best remove the "nubs". Have you attempted this improvement, and if so, how did you get rid of these "nubs", "pimples" and "warts"?

What I did for the PA was to start with a tiny awl and put a dimple in the pimple that are the class lights.  Then with a pin vise, I drilled a hole in the middle, and then went with succeedingly larger bits until I had a hole big enough for a jewel.

I purchased the jewels at Hobby Lobby.

For the lift rings, I plan on shaving off with a sharp blade, and then maybe some light sanding. We'll see how it goes.

Doug and I aren't too worried about the factory finish so much, as we know we can get color matched paint.

Thanks!

I drill them out and install 2mm LEDs for class lights.

Hammer and screwdriver.    I love it!!!!!!!

As for stretching the frame.

Im sorry I just couldn't resist.  What you did is actually good to know. I passed up a good deal on a CB&Q F3 set because of the bug eyed number boards.

It was perfect (and I lol!).

And yes, I really had to use a hammer to get the old ones old.
