I have some imported vintage 1950's vehicles (Dinky, etc) that were painted over with model paint using a brush.  The paint was probably an oil base since that was before the advent of acrylics and water base paints.

I would like to remove the brushed on paint and get down to the original color.  Anyone have any ideas?  Responses would be greatly appreciated.

The paint on Dinky Toys is pretty hard-shell - I think it was baked on, but can't be sure. ELO is a good place to start. Depending on what it was painted with, mineral spirits, denatured alcohol, or lacquer thinner might be possible backup choices. Lacquer thinner is pretty powerful stuff; if you use it, I'd just wipe it on and not leave it in place for very long.

If the cars have windows, be sure to keep any paint solvents from getting on the windows. They are made of some kind of celluloid or soft plastic and do not resist organic solvents.
