I have used pin striping tape to do this. It can be had in widths as narrow as 1/32". I got mine at an automotive paint store but have seen similar tapes at hobby shops.

There are thin masking tapes. Both 3M and Tamiya makes them. You could make you own by placing some masking tape on a glass plate and use a straight edge to cut you own strips. The advantage of the Tamiya tape is you get minimum creep under the tape with the result being a nice sharp edge.

Painting is a good way to do pilot striping another easy way would be decals stripes.
Wasn't too difficult on these Atlas SW's. Relatively large strips.
If you lay your masking tape down and shoot it with clear first, the clear coat will seal the tape and keep your color coat from seeping under it. You will have a very sharp edge. A car modeler told me about this trick.
