A brief history of this special locomotive:
New York Central J-1e Hudson #5344 was built in 1931 and was the last J-1 class Hudson constructed. It was one of two J-1 class Hudsons built with roller bearings on the drive wheels. In 1934, it just happened to be in the shop and was chosen to wear the Commodore Vanderbilt streamlining. It was upgraded with Scullin Disk drive wheels from the original spoked wheels. In 1939, it traded in it's Commodore Vanderbilt streamlining for Dreyfus-style streamlining for NYC Mercury passenger train service. #5344 was one of only two locomotives to be streamlined twice in it's career and the only J-1. The streamlining was eventually removed and it received a PT tender. Unfortunately, it was scrapped in the 1950s, though supposedly it's headlight and front number board still survive though it's unknown if they in-fact belonged to this locomotive. Lionel also chose this special engine to become their legendary 700E Hudson which are coveted by collectors to this day.
