The 2-8-2 Mikado is one of the few traditional-sized engines I don't have. The Pennsylvania version with TMCC/RS5 seems to come up on the used market pretty often. I checked it out on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJYbQtLz7p8 and was surprised that the whistle sounds more like a diesel horn. Is this whistle remotely prototypical or did Lionel mess this up?

Well, it sounds nothing like my Legacy Mikado, and it sure sounds pretty lame to me.

Thanks John. That's what I thought. I just watched a few videos of the new Light Mikado like the NKP 587 and was really impressed. Think I'll have to go with a LC+ if I head down the path of a traditional size Mikado.
There's also this version of the NYC Mikado that came as a separate sale item. This one comes with number specific RailSounds 5.0. Item number is 6-38609.
I have the Pennsy version - Yes whistle is not good but everything else about the loco and its sounds are excellent for what it cost.

I agree. Mine has been chugging away for many years, however, I rarely blow the whistle. I'd describe the sound it makes as a "screaming tweet".
