A couple of weeks ago I was contacted by the Eastern Division by a email about a survey they are doing with dealers at York.

It was a 4 question survey for dealers.

1st one about allowing photos in dealer halls.

2nd about if helpers would have a problem with photos in dealer halls.

3rd about closing at 7:00 or 6:30 with a 10 minute window to leave the hall.

4th about closing member halls at 5:00 or 4:30.

I did not see anything about when we may learn of any changes.

Anybody hear anything on this?

I haven't been to York so I don't really understand Questions 1 and 2. Are Dealers previewing prototype models or something secret that they don't want photographed? and; If a Dealer Helper is exactly what it sounds like, why would they be especially camera shy? I'm sure there are good reasons for these. I'd appreciate any explaination.

I couldn't figure that one out either, so can't provide an explanation.  What Helpers want or don't want is pretty much irrelevant in my opinion.  I'm a Helper myself since we (ORG) are registered with one table/booth holder and "X" number of Helpers.  Same applies to other manufacturers/dealers/sellers.

Explanations vary.
Some say its for security and privacy.

Others say its to avoid having the show's traffic flow impeded by photographers.

Take your pick.

The show gets very crowded, and the isles, no matter how wide, get congested.

People love to complain about the show, and make fun of its rules. Its a very successful show, the Eastern Division Show Committee must have been doing something right for all these years. I appreciate their effort!

I don't want to see the show start before noon. If the show started any earlier, I'd have to travel on Wednesday, and stay overnight.

According to the last member map I saw, a large percentage of TCA members and probably all Eastern Division members live within range to set out early Thursday morning at get there in time for the noon start.

That's what I plan to do.  The sun will (hopefully) still rise on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday morning.  After that, I don't really care.

That said, I still wouldn't mind seeing the photography ban eliminated and I also would support a 10 a.m. opening time on Thursday.  But I don't recall any Eastern Div. official soliciting my opinion.

Dealer Helper = scantily dressed girl

(ask Steve B)

I have to side with keeping the Thursday noon opening as well. Same reason, that's my driving time. I visit with relatives in NY whenever I travel north from Florida for the show. Early Thursday morning I drive over from there and arrive at around 11. For that hour before the show I usually just double check any shopping lists / route plans, get myself organized, and maybe even grab a quick nap in the car if I'm feeling tired from the early start and long drive. Noon opening really is perfect for these "drivers"; the people that are just too "bored" in that time should check out the forum hot dog social in the parking lot.

Aside from sellers, why do people feel they need to be there when the doors open?  After all, the meet goes on for a good number of hours on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and these days the chances of one of your sought-after items being gobbled-up in the first few hours is kind of slim, especially since most people on this forum don't even profess to be avid collectors.

I drive up Thursday Morning also 4 am is not early for me. It's 3 1/2 hours from Pittsburgh not a long drive at all. I am up so I leave. Get there and Nothing to do till Noon. Why not leave later then I would be home waiting to go.  Look at the Fairgrounds People just waiting for something to do. Open at 9 or noon . If it is 11 or 10 just make it 9.  I would even like to see 8am opening time.

Sounds like a plan!  Just make sure you don't text or gab on your cell phone while you're driving because that is frowned on by most states and your insurance company will just love to up your rates a bit after a conviction (or accident), assuming they even keep you on board.

Folks interested in collecting (there still are a few of us) want to be there when the show opens. There are still desirable items that are in very short supply.

Sometimes folks in the dealer halls have these items, so early hours for the dealer halls only wouldn't work.

I can see where operators wouldn't need to be there at the opening, so maybe they should wait to come until Friday, when the show opens nice and early. Then they wouldn't have to worry about what to do for a couple of hours.

We all look at the show though the prism of our own experience. I am also an Eastern Division member, and have a 6 1/2 hour drive from the Capital District of NYS. Plus there are long sections of route 81 what a prone to heavy fog.

If the show needs to open earlier on Thursday, why stop at 8:00 am?
Were I to drive down on Wednesday, I'd be up by 4:00 or 5:00 AM. Why not open the show at 6:00 AM? That would probably be before local rush hour traffic.

For the record, AND for anyone else who might be listening , Someone else would be doing the driving!!

So when is everyone going to start complaining about hand held cell phone use when driving?  York never goes by without mucho griping.

I too was asked by the TCA eastern division these four questions. I do not have any problem with the photos, however I leave very early on Wednesday from Buffalo w a 7 hour drive. Once at York it take me several hours to set up including much of Thursday morning. I might be ok w a 11:00 start time for Thursday.

If any of the dealers still need the time before noon to complete their setup, then an early opening in the dealer halls becomes a nightmare for them.  I occasionally go to a flea market that opens at the same time for both sellers and buyers, and it is a real PITA to have buyers swarming over you when you are trying to set up.
