I have a Lionel Pirate Ship Amusement ride that is not operating. I believe that I read somewhere a while ago that Lionel does not have parts available to repair, or, there have been quite a few issues with this amusement ride and essentially it is not repairable. Does any OGR Forum member have any suggestions or know of a someone who could repair? Thanks very much!

@Bessemerguy Is the motor dead? i.e. when you slide the on/off button nothing happens?
Does it hum? No broken wires underneath?
I have one from when they first came out. It worked fine for about 12 years, then the motor stopped turning. I found a replacement motor myself at a local train/RC car shop.
if it is your motor, I may be able to help you
David,
Thanks for reply. The motor vibrates and hums but there is no movement. The wheel underneath the ship which would rotate does not move. Thus the ship does not move
I have a non-working pirate ship also. I also would like to know a replacement motor and/or boards can be purchased an/or if someone can repair. Motor appears to be not working. Thanks.
Regarding my particular Pirate Ship Ride, the motor vibrates but there is not any movement of the ship. I found an earlier post on the OGR Forum that an individual had Brasseur Electric Trains in Saginaw Michigan repair their Port Ship Ride. I called them, about 10 days ago, and spoke to one of the repair techs. He did not imply to me that if it was the motor that it could not be repaired, but of course he could not diagnose the exact issue if he did not have it in hand to examine. I have not yet sent it to Brasseur for inspection. I wish that I could provide more advice to you. I did read somewhere a number of years ago that Lionel was not supplying any parts for this device....not sure if that is actually true or not. Some Lionel repair centers may have existing motors or parts that they are using for repairs. Wishing you luck with your situation.
The motors Lionel uses are not their own, they're off the shelf parts that are readily available. If you're handy, identify the motor and make the repair vs. paying Lionel's 500% markup on a $3.00 motor. I've now done that on numerous accessories
Like so many accessories, the KNOWN failure on this one is a cracked gear, not a failed motor.
Classic press fit on a knurkled/splined shaft that creates stress risers in the plastic gear and eventually the gear yields and cracks. That causes 2 things- the gear teeth spread and thus jam when those out of spacing teeth interfere with the next gear and it slips on the shaft.
Parts breakdown https://www.lionelsupport.com/...te-Ship-Ride-6-14171
Again, that layshaft is knurled/splined, and the gears press fit on. There is a small gear that interfaces the rack gear, and this is likely to crack due to the size of the gear vs bore size, however the large gear too can crack. Either gear failing stops the motion.
That said, it's entirely possible to also find a cracked gear in the LEFT side of this gearbox between the motor and crankshaft.

The fix is typically to measure the failed gear with calipers and count the number of teeth. Then search and identify an off the shelf commercial gear with the same teeth count and pitch as well as shaft and bore size. I also take a file and slightly dull the knurling on the shaft to prevent it splitting the new gear when pressing on. Also drilling out the new gear with precision small drills to decrease the bore interference fit can prevent splits while still not allowing the gear to slip on the shaft.
Sorry, I do not have handy at the moment the specs for those specific gears (of the final output layshaft). The smaller pinion gear is large pitch to interface into the moving rack gear.
I know the motor side of the gears up to the crankshaft disk are standard and as seen in a previous accessory post- those gear assortments work. Seen here https://ogrforum.com/...2#170078122545027572
The motor also is nothing special either and dual shaft is not a hard requirement. I believe Lionel may have considered using a flywheel to keep the motor smoother and spinning when power was cut but eliminated that during production.
This motor for the sawmill seems to be the same type with very short shafts but could work??

My motor does not run for whatever reason. Where can one buy a replacement motor?

Again, most likely, your motor is jammed and not spinning because a gear cracked and is jamming the driveline. I would check and solve that FIRST.
However, keep attempting to run it and sit there and hum, and yes you cook the motor from stalled armature sitting there just cooking one segment.
I linked an equivalent motor type that likely "could work" from Lionel parts.- Just move the worm gear over from your original motor.

Otherwise, try to find a similar 3rd party motor.

Thank you for the reply. I’ve removed the motor from the gears, applied power, it does not run. The sawmill motor’s shaft appears to be too short for the worm gear.
Appreciate your help.
