Hello everyone.  Longtime lurker, first time poster.  I always thought a Polar Express reefer would look great on my scale set and hoped Lionel would make one.  After waiting without success through a few catalog cycles, I decided to try my hand at making one.  So, I bought this MTH R50b from Steve Nelson (Mr. Muffin) back in the fall:

From there, I stripped it, primed it, air brushed it, and re-lettered it to this:

I had no experience whatsoever in such a project.  The final result isn't perfect by any means, but it passes the test for a rookie.  The only thing more pedestrian than my airbrushing skills are my photography skills, but if they were better it would be apparent how terrifically well the paint colors match the scale Lionel set.  This is by no means a way of puffing, but instead brings me to the main reason for my post: literally everything I used in completing this project came from this forum - selection of an airbrush (I didn't own one before), types and colors of paint, decal removal technique, decal application technique, and even where to purchase the decals (forum sponsor) - it all came out of this forum from guys like AMC Dave, Keith (Mich & Ohio Valley Lines), and others.  It really is a great place to learn.

I meant to post these photos back in the Christmas season, but time gets away.  However, my procrastination is not a reflection of my appreciation for all the great information I have learned from lurking around these parts for the last several months.

Thanks, Chris, that is very nice of you to say. I think you are right about airbrushing.  In fact, the only red color match I found was a Krylon spray can. It worked okay, but seemed to go on very heavy compared to the blue paint applied via the airbrush. After getting the hang of it a little bit, I would probably work on a red PE color match for my airbrush if I were doing the project again.

That looks great! You did excellent work. Shoot I think I want to make one now. How did you get the colors? I painted a whole set of mth Madison passenger cars and an mth Berkshire. The colors were something I kept going back and fourth with. oh and the lettering, that was a task too.

Excellet job!

Thanks for the kind words. For the blue, I airbrushed Model Masters (Testors) intermediate blue and mixed in a few drops of dark blue. For the red, I used a a spray can recommended here on the forum in one of the other PE threads (I’m happy to dig it out if you can’t find it). If I were doing the project again, I would locate a red paint for the airbrush and avoid the spray paint. The blue went on much better and not nearly as thick. For lettering, I used a set of off-the-shelf PE decals from LBR. Again, thanks for the nice words - I saw your PE thread and thought you did a great job as well. Fun stuff.

Still hesitating on painting my Lionel Polar Railroad boxcar door guides.

Hello BobbyD.  I also have the PRR PS-1 boxcar.  The blue on it is very similar to the PE blue.  So, the mix I noted for my airbrush above should be a very good match for your door guides if you go that direction.  Good luck.

It is this car, manufactured with black door guides instead of blue...

Ah, I was thinking this one (but I’ll bet they’re the same blue): http://www.lionel.com/products...-boxcar-1225-6-27263
