My generator car doesn't work well and I changed the drive washer a few years ago. It never worked well. My question is which drive washer came with this car? Does it take the 3 finger version or the 6 finger version? I know OEM Loinel parts work best. Right now, I have to raise the track voltage to 17 volts to get it to turn and its slow. Should the fan blade on top be pulled down magnetically against the washer when voltage is applied? Seems like that is slowing it down.

I agree with Chuck on the gluing, the washer normally does not need to be glued.

IMHO, as long as the washer is one of the "good ones" it doesn't matter whether a three-finger or six-finger one is used.

Unless I am mistaken, the "fan" has a little pin that goes into a hole in the center of the electromagnet.
If so, I find that cleaning out the hole with a twist drill held in ones fingers or a pin vise does wonders. The idea is to remove any rust or grime, not to enlarge the hole.

Once the hole is cleaned out, a bit of graphite in the hole can be helpful. I would not use graphite anywhere else in the mechanism.

Also make certain the pin is clean.

Be carefull not to bend that pin (hopefully it is not bent already).

I took the advise here and put it to use. I used the pin vise and cleaned out the hole. I removed the glue from the back of the drive washer. I then used a bit of graphite and it took off spinning nicely. I was using an MTH Z-1000 to run it. Out of curiosity, I tried the Lionel LW I had here. It works much nicer. Seems to like that post war wave form better. It will spin good at 14 volts now. Thanks for the advise guys.
