post war GG1 trucks.

 I solved that problem on a conventional classics GG1 by swapping out the wheels and axles. The problem often is the wheel width is too narrow, or in some cases, too wide. Take a good look at that.

Taylorra:  Besides adjusting the guide tab, you should look at the wheel holes that the axle passes through.  As these holes in the wheels wear and open-up, they wobble/pidgeon-toe on the axles and move out of gauge.

          You can also add a washer, tension spring, and another washer to the guide tab on top of the truck and below the frame slot; this will put pressure on the truck to help it track better;  but check the wheel holes and the axles too.  Hope this helps.  Dennis M.

Thanks for the help guys. I had thought about adding washers or shims to the axles, but I am not confident about spreading the cast frame to get the axles out.  How do you do that without cracking the side frames?  Also, what was the source for the replacement wheels and axles?

Are these engines authentic Postwar, or modern era reissues?

They are Post war. Don't want to break the side frames.  I also have a 2332 GG1 which tracks perfectly.  Although the manuals say the 2332 and 2340 are mechanically identical, Because my 2332 single motor will not pull my Congressional passenger set

up my steepest grade, I thought to put the trailing trucks from the 2332 on the 2340 dual motor.  They won't fit.  the 2332 trailing truck, when coupled to the 2340 is too tight. Won't swivel at all.  I have checked with Lionel and they tell me they have trucks for the 2340 Celebration engine in stock.  They say they will fit the Post war variety. Any thoughts?

They will fit the post war engines but not the 2332.  I believe the area were the mounting srew attaches to the poweer truck is rather a flat area.  On all the dual motors, the mounting area has a bend in it...

I used post war box cars wheels and axles to fix the truck derailing problem. This was on a CC 2340.

Most of these tips seem to apply to modern era GG-1's.

The only fix with which I am familar is bending the hook.

I hope someone will post the technique on removing the wheels from a postwar GG-1 pilot truck. I am not comfortable doing this, and would like to read about techniques other folks use.

The later Lionel GG1s didn't come with Fast Angle wheels.  Only the earliest MPC ones.  I changed mine out soon after I got them.

There's no easy way to remove the wheelsets from GG1 trucks.  I place a small flat bladed screwdriver between the outer surface of the wheel and the side frame and pry.  It's always worked.  I try to flex the opposite side frame out a bit also, it helps.  Normally there's enough play and the end of the axle pops out.

The reason I mentioned using post war box car wheels is because he didn't mention whether or not his GG1 wheels were out of guage or not. If so, and he doesn't want to try to move the wheels on the axle, he can use the regular box car wheels. Its not that hard to remove axles from those trucks and replace them.

The later model GG1's DID come with fast angle wheels. My cc GG1 had them.
