In looking at the new 2012 Lionel Signature Catalog, I really like the UP Anniversary Set that is listed under the heading "Traditional Postwar Inspired". By every definition, it looks like a Conventional Classic that is based on an iconic postwar engine or set. It has all the features of a CC – Pullmor motor, Magne-Traction, die-cast trucks and frame, postwar-inspired packaging, etc. It has it all! As far as I can tell, the only reason it’s not a Conventional Classic is that when the original series was announced in the 2008 Volume 2 Catalog, the CC’s were to be released over the next three years, so I guess times up and no more Lionel Certificate of Authenticity.

Or maybe with "Postwar Inspired" they think they can get away from all the complaining about how different they are from the originals. They don't have to be "faithful reproductions" like the CC's were supposed to be.

Was anything really a "faithful reproduction"?
I like the UP anniversary set and the repro 2031 Rock Island too.
There is a possibility I may pre-order one or both.
From what I see so far, the set is a much better value.
With the reintroduction of the diecast frames on these FAs, this would be a great time to make some FB units with diecast frames to go with them. They could be used with these engines as well as the Post War and Williams versions. How about it Lionel?

Agreed. I ordered the UP Anniversary Set yesterday.
I wonder if the "Post War Inspired" packaging is a little sturdier than the PWCC Series packaging?

The way they were ripped mercilessly about the electronic horn and e-unit, the Sante Fe F3 red color, and the sliced open boxes I can't blame them for taking a defensive action.

In 1993, they did sell the first re-issue of the diecast frame Alcos, the 11734 Erie as an ABA. But when they did the Anniversary UP in 1994, they dropped the B unit.
My Erie is put away. I don't think the frame is diecast. The 1993 catalog states that the trucks were diecast.
As I recall, the reviews of the day were positive for the "AA", but not for the "B". If so, maybe that's why the "B" was dropped for the UP.

Jon,
You must not have bought a CC GG1. Sturdier? It takes 30 minutes and an arbor press to get the engine out of the boxes and wrappings.
Pete
I checked the Erie "B" unit. It came with diecast metal trucks, a sheet metal frame, and a plastic fuel tank.

I've noticed the brown on the IC F3's appears to be closer to the MPC color than the Postwar color.
But, I tend trust catalog illustrations less often these days. I'm interested in the IC set, but I'll wait until I see one in person.

I go with the trainman theory, they won't have to listen to the wailing and moaning.

Don't worry, there will still be a wailing and gnashing of keyboards no matter what Lionel does.
