Possibly the reason I only owned mine for a short while. I too bought it on the cheap with the seller mentioning only one cab sunshade had come off. I figured that's an easy replacement Lionel part.

Well, turns out there were multiple broken parts on it, and the replacement parts themselves from Lionel were broken. The die-cast on this model just seems so soft and brittle. Took me quite a bit of extra dough to restore it with unbroken new parts and I eventually put it back on the market (having to take a hit of course). Unless I catch another one on the cheap with NO broken parts, I've had enough of that model for now.....

I would like to see - CC 671 turbine + pass. set, way over due. Legacy SP AC-4 cab-forward, Legacy yellow belly hudson, Legacy scale NW-2 and any Vision steamers or diesels

Maybe Lionel could do another survey on what we want. I know a number of years ago (well over 8) Lionel did one. I do not remember if it was from on their web site or if it was e-mailed to me. I know that I responded to it and that it was between 6 to 10 questions. I know I asked for earlier period steam engines, subway cars and operating cars in the survey.

How 'bout some new CC pieces...more F3's  More GEEPs, Y'know....all the good stuff, and then for the BIG chooch folks; a newly tooled N&W Y6/Y6a based loosely on the Y6b of ten years ago.  Then top it all off with an S1/S1a 0-8-0 switcher with all the proper N&W detail, and tender.  Whooo...Hoot, Hoot !    I may be the world's biggest Dieselover....but nobody ever boiled water like N&W...NOBODY !

Wow, thanks for the heads up...Mine (I think) is still in one piece probably cause I rarely run it...There's so much add on detail I probably wouldn't notice if something did break off.   This bad boy sits on a shelf 99.9% of the time mostly because my layout is much too small to appreciate it on the rails.

Bottom line, If yours has soft metal they all have soft metal..

Looks like special handling is in order.

That's exactly why I couldn't even request a partial refund from the seller. I kept discovering the damage little by little until I had to look the entire locomotive up and down one day long after the sale. Handling with the utmost care is mandatory on this one.

We ran ours all the time. Beautiful. The nearly full two page photo from our old layout published in CTT last year showed it front and center, plus an unshrouded J in honor of our pal Scott.

I have been preaching this for a while. I see they have bumped an 80 watt up to 180, but you still have only one throttle.  What's the point.

I thought the last catalog was a step in the right direction and offered a few things for everyone.  Keep bringing out the postwar remakes, the 0-27 and semi-scale offerings, and the CC sets.  More operating accessories.

Not likely - it hasn't been all that long since the RS-5 version, and they are pretty common on eBay and don't go for a premium. I don't see it as a viable market proposition.

If Lionel actually were to re-run the Hiawatha Atlantic, they should do the following:

- Paint it with something resembling prototype colors, not the over-saturated circus-wagon colors they used on the previous one.

- Put a maroon semicircle at the rear of the tender, like the railroad did, to carry the maroon stripe into the tender. Those cars were built to go with the 4-6-4, not the Atlantic, but the railroad did run them behind the Atlantics and they did that fix on the paint job to make it look better.

- Get the sound right. There should be both a horn and a whistle - the prototype had both. And the horn should be a SINGLE chime Leslie Tyfon, not the double-chime air horn used on Lionel's previous Hiawatha. You can download a single-chime Leslie Tyfon on the Internet, for heaven's sake - no excuse for getting it wrong.

You would be more likely to get a Penn Central GP30 or GP35 from Lionel, since the K-Line GP38-2 is under the control of Bachmann.

Lionel can make a Penn Central set

Penn Central GP30

Penn Central GP35

Penn Central PS-1 40' Boxcar

PC PS-2 2-Bay Covered Hopper in the Green Sand Service scheme

PC PS-2-CD 3-Bay Covered Hopper in a Gray or Green body with one of the PC variations of Graphics

Penn Central AAR 50' Double-Door Boxcar
PC Pullman-Standard Single-Door 60' Auto Parts Boxcar

PC Bay-Window Caboose

Maybe even throw in a PC PS-5 gondola.  I would be very happy with this set.  My wife, on the other hand, might not be so thrilled.

This is quite interesting.  If you can, insights on the "periodicity" or why and how you reach you conclusions would be appreciated (I re-read your posts, not quibbling with you, truly think you may be correct - just really  interested in your understanding of how and why Lionel reaches the decisions it does)
