HEY FORUM MEMBERS, I'M LEANING TOWARDS STAYING FAITHFUL TO LIONEL FASTRACK BUT I'M ALSO KEEPING A FOCUS ON SCALETRACKS. I'D APPRECIATE IF I COULD OBTAIN SOME PHOTOS OF BALLASTED FASTRACK AND BALLASTED SCALETRACK TO HELP ME IN MY FINAL DECISION. I PLAN ON VISITING MY LOCAL TRAIN HOBBY SHOP ASAP FOR A FINAL DECISION BUT THE PHOTOS OF BOTH TYPES OF TRACK BALLASTED WILL HELP ME SWAY MY DECISION. I'VE ALSO PURCHASED RR TRACK (FASTRACK VERSION) A WHILE BACK FOR DESIGN PURPOSES BUT SINCE THEN I'VE DECIDED ON ADDING TRESTLE BRIDGES (SUBWAY AND WOODEN MOUNTAIN REGION TYPE) AND I'D LIKE TO GET THEM AS PHOTOTYPICAL AS POSSIBLE AND THE ONLY WAY THAT I CAN THINK OF RIGHT NOW WOULD BE TO USE SCALETRACK ON THESE TRESTLES. ANY PHOTOS FROM SOME VETERAN HI-RAILERS WOULD BE DEEPLY APPRECIATED. THANKS AGAIN - MARSHELANGELO

There's a world of difference between Lionel's FasTrack and MTH ScaleTrax (as opposed to MTH RealTrax, which, like FasTrack, has molded-in roadbed).
If a realistic/prototypical look--a hi-rail approach--is what you're looking for, you probably should take a close look at ScaleTrax. Mounted on roadbed and properly ballasted, it will certainly have a more realistic appearance than FasTrack, even if you try to apply ballast to the already-ballasted (molded plastic) FasTrack roadbed. The shape and size of the rails, for example, is a consideration.
Other options to look at would be GarGraves, Ross, and Atlas O if a hi-rail layout is what you're wanting to create.
FasTrack is a great track system (it's what I currently have on both of my layouts), but I'll be changing track on my larger layout soon so I can work toward more of a hi-rail approach myself. Will be using GarGraves track and Ross switches.
Here are a few pictures of Atlas track with Ballast and Scenery.
