Very sad posting, but we have hope for the future. How are the employees taking the news?

I read about this in the Wall Street Journal this morning. At least management was kind enough to lay-off everyone in time to enjoy summer!

Some have fled to other parts of the state looking for work.  A few are left behind to tear out track and sell of equipment and buildings.   There is a rumor that a new office high rise for a big and upcoming photography business will be taking over the land.  Employees are hopeful that with the sale that will get a portions of the sales.

Always sad when a RR ceases operations but the press release was very snappy.

For those of you with attention to detail: did you notice the flag was at half mast?

I think you are taking the wrong approach here.  Rather than smaller; you should be thinking bigger- as in bigger trains.

Here on the Harrisburg, Horningford & Western; we have implemented the elements of Precision Scheduled Railroading.  Our late CEO E. Hunter Hurtem was the champion of PSR at several other railroads before bringing the process to the HH&W.

As you can see in the video; we are running longer trains using distributed power and have also successfully “clean sheeted” our yards and sidings.  We have also slightly modified the conventional wisdom of PSR by adding cabooses back onto our trains.  This enables the brass to ride along and count all the money they are saving.

The only real downside to the longer trains is the backup at grade crossings but; those folks aren’t shareholders so who cares.  😉

One thing that the M&GL is struggling with is the decision to sell their Great Lakes Car Ferry.   They do not want to "moth ball" it for years, in hope to put it back into service.  If they sell it they can use the revenue from the purchase to quickly acquire more land and track.  If they keep it they will need to find a place to it dock it.

Dock the car ferry in the water at a dock. LOL.
