Is it necessary that the toothed gear be permanently attached to the drive wheel or will the engine move just fine if the gear and wheel are separately pressed onto the axle?
Another question: what are the longitudinal "cuts" called found on the end of some axles?

Thanks once again Rob. Some may not understand my question about AF drive wheels. I am new to AF and the wheels I received on one electric loco showed that the gears on the drive wheels are "permanently" attached to the wheels. On a different loco the wheels are a mess and the gears on the drive wheels are apart. Since I have no idea how to reattach them I was wondering if the geared wheel and the drive wheel would function OK if pressed on the axle separately. I really appreciate this forum.
The separate gear style wheels cannot be directly replaced without a ton of work... fortunately the cast-in gear wheels will work in their place.
