problem with an mth engine

Hi. I have an MTH RAILKING COMMODORE VANDERBILT PS1 which made 3 strage sounds when I started it up today. They weren't bell sounds or clanks but more like a chug sound. It was working perfectly fine for months and I've been running it a few times a week with no problems. Any ideas what this might be? I'm using an older MRC transformer. Thanks.
