Besides showing off my growing Lionel traditional sized GG1's, there's a curiosity in the production of one of these modern era examples that poses the question "why?"  It's not obvious in this photo but the sharp eye will catch the anomaly in the next.

Here we see, in chronological order, an Amtrak decorated 18303 from 1989, a 18308 silver version from 1992 and the green TMCC equipped 18313 from 1996.   Other than color differences and the lack of a E-unit on the 18313 can you spot the major oddity?

The Cab on the Silver PRR(Black Roof) is longer and more angled. The other two the cab roofs is shorter and more squared off. One of the horns on the AMTRAK is smaller and the cutout for the front facing windshield are larger..

Is that what you were looking for?  So what did I win?

Close enough, suzuchovich.  The middle shell is also wider throughout making the central body area look beefy.   The fatter look is really evident when comparing front views.

Now, tell me why?  Why did Lionel make a noticeable change to casting molds then return to the regular dimensions later on?

As usual, you win my eternal admiration

Never thought about that.  Did MTH and Lionel get along nice back then?

Edit :When I open her up for routine maintenance I'll check for Mike's finger prints.

The shell in question is from '92 though...still, it could explain why.
