Getting into some Protosound Standard Gauge and was told to make sure that it is 3v if it is the 2.0 version. Is there an easy way to identify a 3v board vs. 5v board without taking the engine/tender apart? Thanks for your help!

Sure, look at the charging port. If it's round with a single pin, it's the 5V board, if it's rectangular with two pins, it's the 3V board. For STD gauge, some of them have the board in the locomotive.
Another way it to look up the model on the MTH site and check the user's manual. The battery replacement instructions will show what battery is in the unit, the 5V ones will have a flat 9V battery.
Thanks John!! This loco has the 2 pins rectangular connection in the locomotive instead of the tender. So it's a 3v. Is it better to have the system in the tender or is either ok?
Almost all of the 3V boards are in the tender. I'd say all, but I'm sure there must be one that was put in the locomotive.
Thanks for you help John!
