Looking at a typical PS1 board with the giant capacitor on the rear of the bottom (driver) board near the coupler connector (see photo)... I am wondering what its exact purpose is?
Found some smaller PS1 trolley bottom boards that are nearly identical and compatible, but are all missing the giant cap (to save space), but what is the functional difference? Obviously the advantage is a smaller footprint, but... what is the disadvantage of not having that cap on the driver board?

Coupler firing circuit. Engines that did not have couplers like some of the trolleys and vehicle trains had that section of board cut off to fit. QSI had a separate add on board for couplers for their 3 stack. Made it 4 boards to have couplers and PS. G

Note the cut lines to remove the coupler functionality.
