When I first heard Lionel's, I thought they were better. I believe it was because they were louder and fuller. I don't believe they are as accurate as MTH to most of the real engines. The biggest improvement to me, was when I got the first release of the ES44s that had an upgraded speaker and soundset for PS2. I believe the narrow nose dash diesels were upgraded too.

Now the PS3 soundset that I have in a dash 8 is very good also. It is just one notch quieter and I've turned it up.  I don't have them blaring loud anyways. It is full and realistic, to the point that I've stopped looking at other brands.

There are other companies in DCC that are trying to up the anti. They have every sound and more sensitivity. So I'm hoping future PS3 releases will grow in technology to stay current. I'm pretty happy right now with them. Would be cool if we could add a subwoofer for more rumble!!!

The sounds in my ps3's are a little more robust then my ps2's but they are no match for Lionel's legacy sounds. This only applys to ps3 diesels as I have no steam.

the whole dcs platform needs to be upgraded but MTH has no time frame to do it. IMO they are losing ground but maybe they don't care.

PS3 has additional sound capabilities, but what come out of the loco depends as much on what sound samples they have available as what kind speaker is installed. It seems Lionel is a bit more proactive in seeking out obscure sound effects--I've seen MTH's sound engineer's office (I've done a few voiceovers there), and Rodney Dangerfield's catchphrase comes to mind

Your right Marty I have no first hand knowledge but my info comes from some people that do. I know the upgrade is about a year and half away maybe more but from my point of view they seem to be dragging their feet when it comes to the o gauge segment of their business. Are they spread out to thin with all the different scales?

The dcs platform is getting old in the tooth and you can only add so many patches and upgrades before the whole thing collapses.

I have been a MTH supporter since the beginning, I have had dcs since day one and I only want the best for them. But there comes a time when they have to stand up and do what is right for their customers and themselves.

I only hope they will do what is necessary to put themselves on top as they once were.

David, thanks for responding.  Being a DCS beta tester I can say your friends information might not be exactly on the money.   We all want new things to keep the hobby fresh.  In the last year, both MTH and Lionel have addressed operating issues with new boards.  MTH has PS-3 and Lionel is now using the new RCMC board that is very good also.  I like both and trust me, MTH is not sleeping at the stick.

I like it when someone raises the bar then the other company has to respond.
