So far my PS2 equipped R-17 Redbird set has given me nothing but trouble.

The second power car is on its third board and last night the first power car failed.

I tested and programmed the second car and went to test the first car (it's been sitting in the box for a few months waiting for the 2nd car to arrive back from MTH and was running fine when put away).  I placed it on my test track (3 sections of straight) and plugged in the power.  The car gave a quiet *PFFFT* sound and a puff of acrid gray smoke.

I took off the shell and inner shell and put it on the track again - more smoke.  It is coming from between the two circuit boards.  I would like to separate the boards to see exactly what has failed but they do not want to come apart.  It looks like there is only one multi-pin connector connecting the two boards, but it does not want to separate.

Does anyone know the correct method of separating the two boards?

EDIT:  The board is the older one with the 8.4 volt battery.

Thanks!

Dave,  What is the number of this set?  I thought the set only had one powered car, do you have an add on powered car?

If you want to save some money and time, I can do the repair.  I am a MTH ASC and have converted subway cars to the PS-2 3V system.  I have the parts on hand.  E-mail in profile.

If the smoke came from the center of the board, it is probably the diodes. G

Can you replace parts on the lower board?  Even the upper board seems pretty problematic if the parts are not near the edges.

John,  All the critical parts are sandwiched in the middle.  FETs and a logic chip on the exposed underside of the bottom which I have successfully replaced.

On the top power not much you can do either.  I have replaced a bad capacitor once, but it still did not fix the board.  I think I remember one post were someone saved a 5V board with the cap.  Must have been lucky, because usually something else fails and takes the cap out.  G
