Hi all,

I just purchased an MTH Premier GP40 from 2006. It is new never ran. It loaded into the remote just fine, but after about 20 minutes, the sound just went quiet. I shut down and restarted it and the sound came back. Ran for another 20 minutes then I shut it down for the day. Yesterday I turned it back on, no problems for 15 minutes, then the sound went out again and will not return. I recharged the battery overnight to no avail. I also tried doing a reset, no luck. As a last resort I removed it from the remote and re-added it. Still no sound. The speaker does emit some buzzing/ crackling sound, but that's all. Everything else works, movement, lights, smoke with no issues. I took the speaker out and tried it in another GP40 I have, and it worked just fine. While I had the shell off I checked the connections and wires and noticed nothing unusual. What else could this be? Does MTH still honor this under warranty being that it's from 2006? Or should I just take it back to the store as I know they have another?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Ben

Ben,

When running this engine, does the remote show a letter in parentheses?

If it shows a (D), doppler is on and should be  turned off. If it shows a "C", ProtoCast is on and should be turned off. If it shows an (M), turn off the external microphone.

Last, ensure Clickity-Clack is turned off: Menu/Sound/Clickity-Clack, press the OFF soft key and then the thumbwheel and ENG.

MTH has no warranty on an engine after 3 years from production.

Barry, I don't have any warranty statements handy, but I thought the written warranty was one year from date of purchase.  Is the above disclaimer in the written warranty?  If so, the stores selling MTH have a problem.  If not, there may be some legal issues.

Robert,

MTH changed their warranty policy about 2 years or so ago, not too long after Lionel changed their warranty policy. As I recall (I could be off on the details), MTH's policy is that there's a manufacturers warranty in place for one year for new products purchased from an authorized MTH reseller, within 3 years of the priodut's release.

I seem to remember that Lionel's was 2 years from the catalog in which the item last was displayed, or something similar.

If it's not legal in some states, then its subject to the laws of those states.

What some proprietors of an LHS will admit to knowing has always been subject to conjecture.

Thanks all for the help. I tried everything mentioned again and still nothing. I purchased it from Nicholas Smith on Friday. I hope they will make good on an exchange or refund. This is the first time I've had an issue with an engine. I have 10 others some older and they all work well. Again I hope they will make this right for me. Thanks again, Ben
