 HI GUYS,
I haven't been lurking around here in about 3yrs. Now that my 3yr.old granddaughter found my abandoned train room I need to get back to working on it again. So here's my DUMB question of the day. I'm looking at a new PS3 diesel loco....will it run with DSC ver.3.10.  From what I've been reading I know I should update
,but at this point I'm afraid I might screw something up and right now my train time with my granddaughter is Priceless!!!!!!!!

Thanks,Phil

Hi Phil,

Welcome back!

Any PS3 engine should load into a 3.10 remote and TIU without trouble.  In some cases you might be missing a softkey feature or two that have been added since 3.10, but all the usual stuff will be there.

Do get your upgrade taken care of ASAP.  There are a lot of improvements that have been made since 3.10.

Welcome back.

The kids do make it more fun.

Set up a gondola train and a crane and they are busy for the duration.

Or a loading ramp and a set of corrals with animals in it, that works too.

Also scale is not noticed by kids, as long as it will fit in the car, it will get loaded, hauled and unloaded.

You should update so you have the latest stuff. Some of the additional features of 4.2 over what you have are things like quick set speed where you can set the speed using the number pad to select speed and not scroll. Or brake and stay where you can slow, or speed up and remain at the speed you stopped on, rather than reverting back to the original speed. There's some more too and totally worth it.

I especially like the quickset speed. especially if you have a thumbwheel that goes nuts on you!

If you are going to run PS/3 engines you should definitely upgrade your TIU and remote to 4.20. There are PS/3 features that won't work with 4.10. My first PS/3 unit was an electric, and I could not get manual control of the pantographs until I upgraded to 4.20. This is contrary to what it says in the manual. The same feature was included in a lot of PS/2 electrics, so I'm kind of surprised that the PS/3 version wouldn't work without an upgrade.  Upgrading it yourself isn't all that hard (assuming you have Windows, the software won't work with a Mac), or most dealers will do it for free if you are a regular customer or if you bought the unit from them.

Dave,

All modern (Intel chipset) Macs can run Windows in one of two ways.

Using the included Boot Camp software, the Mac can boot directly into Windows.

Alternatively, one can run a Windows environment as a Mac application from the Desktop using either Parallels or VMFusion.

You would need a USB to Serial cable, just like with any modern PC.
