I’ve been in the hobby a really long time.  Equipment has come and gone over a lifetime.  My involvement has come and gone.  I am currently reviving my involvement, building a layout and unpacking long packed up stuff.

I recently unpacked a QSI sidekick 2 and amazingly the instructions for it.  I liked Proto 1 when it came out and I got into QSI.  I also have a QSI sound box.  Back in the day, I converted at least one engine with a QSI board.  I still have about half a dozen Proto 1 engines.  They all have BCRs now.

I have a poor memory.  I am interested in any recollections about QSI and what it did.  Did QSI develop Proto 1?  Will the sidekick 2 operate proto 1 engines or only QSI equipped engines?

Thanks

Bill

I did a couple QSI installations in brass Williams steamers. They had more features than a Proto 1. At the time pricing was around $225 if you opted for a coil coupler that required another board. The boards took up quite a bit of real estate.  The manual was quite extensive. I remember you could give each engine it’s own unique ID. They could sit silent powered up on a conventional layout. Till they were addressed. Things you did required a lot of throttle movements and button pushes from what I remember. I believe even though the QSI’s had a battery. It wasn’t an issue if it died and you tried to power up the engine. I used an Al Trol throttle at the time. Pretty sure the QSI’s had no issue with it. But using it on a Proto 1 required a workaround.
