Bought a weaver chassis and this came with it - is it a sound board? Help gratefully received

Brian,
This is one of the a ProtoSounds 1 board - basically the same one MTH locos prior to mid 2000 had as well. In fact, almost every item made by MTH, Weaver, and even Williams had these boards. I bought a couple Weaver SD40-2's a couple years ago that had these sound and reverse unit combo circuit boards just like this one.

Hey - thanks for that - could I wire it up to work as a reversing board do you think? And would I need a battery - not too fussed about sound but reverse would be good. Cheers

You would need a rechargeable battery or better yet get the BCR and you will no longer have any battery worries.
This is the "generic" version of the Protosounds 1 board MTH used (had a custom/proprietary set of features). The larger board with the heat sinks/mounting is the DCRU reversing unit; the smaller "daughter board" is the sound board. As mentioned above, a rechargeable 9-volt or BCR will retain the programming, and the boards were prevalent in Weaver and Williams locomotives. I've attached a copy of the QSI programming codes (QS2, which is a superset of QS1) which can be done easily with an MTH Z4000 transformer; more challenging with the throttles on other transformers.

One key difference between the QSI for Weaver was that the board was a separate plug in so you could loose sound and still run the locomotives. All of my 1998 run Weaver GG1s came with QSI sound.
