I bought a set years ago consisting of 736 Berkshire, large metal tender, gray pipe flat car, search light car, metal dump car, six wheel black crane car, and a search light gray work caboose. I have never been able to find this set in any of my old catalogs. The very nice older guy I bought the set from said they replace the original #726 with the 736 because the 726 burned up. When I questioned him about the set he said he bought it at Gunnings Hobby Shop in San Anselmo, California and it came as a set. First of all I never saw a Lionel set from the 40's with that many cars. Of course he could have added to a basic set. What I think happened is that Gunnings put a set together for him and he's just forgotten. In any case it's an impressive looking train. Anyone remember a set like that? Thanks Don

Sounds a lot more like a 671 set.
Rob, did this set have a metal tender? Wonder if he got the set and changed locomotive and added search light car later. It looks newer than other cars. Don
Yep, I think you and scale rail are right. Lots of hobby shops and dealers put their own sets together to clear out inventory, to satisfy customers, and to make unique, good-looking sets.
Customers could buy other locomotives and cars, too.
Could be either or a combination.
It sounds like you do have the 726 tender, the 671 always had the 2020W type.
Even if Lionel did not put this together as a set, it sounds like a neat work train,
and that they should have, given the popularity of Marx 3/16 work trains.
As a second thought, given the "play value" of a work train, say, with a crane and a
pipe and beam car to load and unload, as well as dump cars, I would offer that Lionel 0-8-0 (I think there was a Flyer two rail worktrain powered by an 0-8-0), or a 2-8-0
with a series of cars just like in Don's set. I don't think that old theory of giving the
kid something to do when he gets tired of watching it run in circles is false.
This picture is off the web but it's the searchlight car in the set. It's the vibrating one. I'm sure this was made way after the other cars. Don

To my knowledge the 726/736 Berks never came with a work train, they were with freight cars or Madison Cars and from 46 to 49 they came with a 2426 plastic tender and in 1950 with a 2671 Pennsy long haul tender,I have all of the catalogs from 1935 on,used to get them from Lees in Oakland or Bills on Market st in SF.
Set no 2115WS produced for 1946 was headed by a 726 Berkshire and included a 2460 crane and 2420 searchlight caboose and a 3451 log dump car . Lionel considered this a Work Train. I believe the tender was die cast.

LIRR Steamer,
You bet my Uncle Russell had that set, it was a fantastic little work train. I believe my cousin Faith still runs that work train around her Christmas tree each year. There was no search light car with that original Lionel Work Set, it was the extra add on car.
