How can engines show up as "Active" on the "Engine Screen" when there is no power applied to the track on which the engines are sitting?
Replies sorted oldest to newest
That list is ONLY updated with a refresh or a read command. So an engine not accessed but was last active- remains active until you specifically attempt to control that engine or do a read/refresh that checks all engines.
That is logical and, of course, makes sense. I am not sure it holds completely true…but I will observe some more.
Is it possible to reset a “lash-up” using the app?
If I do a feature reset on a single engine, do I receive a “success” message if the reset is, indeed, successful…SS I would if using the handheld controller?
Thanks for your patience.
I have a WTIU pre-ordered.
Is there going to be a new app to work with that?
Thanks,
John
John...I have not "heard" any talk of a new app to go along with the new WTIU...however, I guess anything is possible.
However, I think the WTIU just represents a "consolidation" of two pieces of hardware into one.

So how will you access all the engine's features you could with a TIU (which I don't have)?
Thanks,
John
John...The WTIU gives you all the features possible as it is a TIU combined with WiFi interface all combined into one "box." As best I can see right now...the App gives you access to all those features now. You just need the separate WiFi device to interface with the TIU.
What am I missing?

Well, you're missing one giant feature of the old TIU/WiFi Unit! The WTIU doesn't support the DCS remote, and many of us don't want to run our trains with our phone.
Touche'...I did miss that as you indicated. My apologies! I have been trying to use an Android tablet with the WiFI app. In some ways, I like it better...in other ways, I do not. I find it much easier to move between engines with the tablet and the app...but, in other ways...I just find the app "flaky." I have the late Mr. Boskowitz's book...but, don't have the patience to read it cover to cover.
I reset engines, occasionally, and have yet to receive a "confirmation message" that the engine has been reset...whereas the remote does seem to confirm a reset. I also thought you could reset a "lashup" with the handheld. I don't find the option available with the app. I am sure the problem must be "me" but, I don't have any way to know.
Just some comments.
I've run a few things with the app, but I'm far from an expert. I just added the capability in case there was a diehard that wanted to use their phone to run trains.
I have the DCS and Lionel WiFi on my system for guests, not for me.

I have the DCS WiFi Explorer so I guess a lot of the features of the app are not available. I'll wait until I get the WTIU and then try it with that. I thought you also needed the remote to, for example, change the chuff rate.
In terms of a tethered remote will they be even available?
John
John...as best I can tell...changing the chuff rate, max speed...all of those features are included with the app. I know virtually nothing about the DCS Explorer...however, as long as you have the "premium version" of the app...you should be set to do whatever you need.
I am sure some of those more well-versed in this "stuff" will chime in sometime soon.
As to the availability of remotes...I thought some were available now...but, not sure.

You missed the point. Remotes are still around, but the new WTIU doesn't support wireless operation with them. You can tether one to the WTIU with a curly cord, that's it. That's not a "remote" to me.

There is no longer a "premium version". That is why I asked if they were coming out with a new app.

For the record, I did not miss the point...was just commenting that if the gentleman needed a remote...for whatever reason...they are still around. I have the WTIU on order...but, at this juncture I am not sure I will ever use it for my imperfect, rinky dinky operation. The WiFi unit is frustrating enough.
It seems like MTH (or maybe a 3rd Party) could make a separate-sale wireless device that could allow the DCS remote to interface with the new WTIU. It would plug into the WTIU's remote input via the remote-TIU cable and allow wireless remote control with the new system.

I have a project in the works that can do exactly this. It's stalled until I get my hands on a WTIU but i tested it with a tiu that had the 900mhz board removed and it worked pretty good.
