The Background:
I just received a brand new Legacy System.  This is my first experience with any Lionel command control system (never had TMCC Cab-1 system, etc.).  I own only a couple Lionel TMCC-equipped locomotives (no Legacy yet!!), and have only run them conventionally.

I fired up the new Legacy system yesterday and loaded in one of my TMCC locomotives (#6-28224 CNJ SD40-2 diesel from 2004).  Everything seems to be working fine, but I'm wondering about certain features...

My Questions:
1.) Is there a way to turn off the interior locomotive cab lights with the Legacy remote?  Or is this simply not an available feature of this TMCC locomotive?

2.)  Can the smoke unit output be adjusted (i.e low-medium-high), or is it simply an on-off thing?  If so, how do you do it with the Legacy remote?

3.) Can the horn and bell sound volume be adjusted independent of the engine sounds?  If so, how do you do that with the Legacy remote?

I'm thinking that these features simply aren't available on a TMCC-equipped locomotive of this era, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and for any help you can provide!

Joey,

I dont have that specific engine so i dont know.  I would suggest looking at the owners manual of the locomotive if you still have it.

Engine lights stay on.  I dont think there is a way to turn that off separately. Legacy engines they automatically turn off when starting to roll, very cool.

Smoke out put can be controlled by engine, its done by pressing the 9 button on the remote.  on the new legacy locos you have four volumes, off, low, medium and high

horn and bell are controlled separately, at least on all TMCC locomotives I have owned.

Legacy will operate any/all of the TMCC features that the loco was originally equipped with. Legacy features are a characteristic of each individual loco rather than the control system.

*Check your owners manual*,if you do not have it  see here, http://www.lionel.com/media/se...ents/72-8224-250.pdf

1. cab light features are strictly a legacy feature and was/is unavailable on TMCC locos.

2. If the smoke unit is adjustable with TMCC on this loco its adjustable with the legacy controller as well.

3. If there are two sound levels under TMCC it will usually be the volume knob for overall and aux1 1 up or aux1 4 down for background sounds.

Legacy is basically a "glorified" TMCC remote the same keystrokes apply to the corresponding features.

One tip there are two modes for tmcc locos, a "cab 1 mode" and "TMCC mode".  TMCC mode will give your locos far superior performance.

Thanks for your responses, guys. I'm pretty sure that everything's working correctly. My TMCC engine from 2004 just doesn't have some of the features I was "imagining", or that I'm accustomed to with my MTH PS-2 and PS-3 engines. Guess I now have a great reason (ok, excuse!!) to buy myself a Legacy-equipped locomotive!

I completely agree. My GP35 engines are amazing using this feature.

Several things to remember is that any TMCC engine controls can be set up for that particular engine in the CAB2 remote assuming that the engine has the TMCC feature. For instance if your engine has Railsounds4 and you program in Railsounds5 in the remote you will not have Railsounds5 in the locomotive. Smoke control is still somewhat low/medium/high but not as controllable as in a Legacy unit. Read the LCD screen as you turn the smoke on/off and it will tell you on the remote. Also check out some of the Legacy videos on the Lionel website as they are a big help also.
