I have a 1055 that is looks like someone put a MagnaTraction motor assembly into the chassis. The armature appears to be defective( resistance between commutator tabs is (.36-.36.-.1) after a through cleaning and inspection I notice 1 armature wire was broken, so I would like to get a new armature or rewind this one . The dilemma is the Lionel part numbering system I can't tell what armature I need, is it the 1055-118 or the 600-125.

Is there a place where you can see what part number supersede older part numbers??

Where can I find winding spec for this armature?

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

Steve

Actually as you and CW pointed out you could have one of two armatures. The 1055-118 on the gear end has a shaft length of 1.5/32. The gear end of the 600-125 armature has a shaft length of 7/32.  These lengths are from the end of the gear to the end of the shaft.

There is also armature 220-120 which is interchangeable with 1055-1118. 220-120 came out in the middle of 62.

I might have fixed it. Here are some pics. Found the split wire and spliced it. Did a ohms check and everything is balanced now.  I love my old Weller Solder station. I applied lacquer over the connections( Hence the protective paper on the shaft). Waiting to dry and try. I let you guys know how it went.

Thanks for all the help

The differences between the two armatures are:

Older one: has a longer tip at the bottom of the shaft. This tip rides in the bearing that is built into the dust cover at the bottom of the motor

Newer one: may or may not have the tip. It has a collar at the bottom of the armature head to act as a thrust bearing against the bearing that is mounted in the motor plate, which is right under the field.

Lionel sold a collar to slip over the older armature's shaft so it could be used with the newer motor truck. But sometimes the windings are too close to the armature's shaft to use it.

I understand that Flatcars1 fixed his motor. I wrote this for completeness.

The switcher motor truck has a different coupler bracket / coupler. That is an Alco motor truck.
It is a bit hard for me to tell from the picture, but I think it is the later style, with the bearing on the plate between the field and the gearbox.
This service manual sheet is for the older truck style, but it makes mention of the new truck style, and the collar I mentioned above.
And this page is for the newer truck style.
